Re: Improving suspension geometry?

http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s177/bse53/IMAG0549_zps5e70a753.jpg They probably would have been a better choice, but the Koni's are adjustable in rebound, and they were $132 from Jegs. After tacking it and then cutting it, I got everything to work (I was worried the body was rubbing in compres...

Re: Improving suspension geometry?

Well, after several unsuccessful attempts I think I got the Koni 30's mounted with the bracket I made to move the UCA mounting points rearward. It's an extremely tight fit. The problem trying to use the Koni's is the extra length and size of the shock body. With the arc of the LCA, there is about 1/...

Re: Muncie M17 with the 4.9 caddy

The car corner weighs about 500 lbs on the front and 700 lbs on the rear with 150 lb of barbell weights in the driver's seat. That puts it close to 2250. My understanding is the manual weighs about 90 lbs vs 170 for the auto. The doors will save 50 lbs. So those to mods will reduce it about 130 lbs,...

Re: Muncie M17 with the 4.9 caddy

Yes, I bought the car with the 4.9. It has been modified to the extent this engine can, as I understand it. > 4.9 Cadillac V-8 > Bored with N* pistons > polished beams > balanced rotating mass > 496 regrind American Cams cam > Allante intake It actually pulls pretty hard to 6K. The reason Tom went w...

Re: Muncie M17 with the 4.9 caddy

Thanks for all the replies. I'm wanted the m17 for the gearing in second. The 282 would require at least one shift in every run. This is a dedicated autocross car so I'm not concerned with the connections that would be used in a street car. XP doesn't even require a reverse gear. I just waned to mak...

Muncie M17 with the 4.9 caddy

What am I going to need to convert the three speed auto in the car to a manual? I've had nothing but problems keeping the auto working. I located a donor car with a M17 4 speed-- the seller said the engine is blown, but said the transmission was working fine. The gearing of the M17 with 275/50-15 ti...

Re: Improving suspension geometry?

Thought I was making progress adapting the Koni 30's. I used the original Carrera shocks to center the shock in the spring. Everything looked good. Cut the old shock mount and welded it to 1.5" piece of 3" pipe. Then cut the pipe to follow the contour of the shock mount. http://i152.photob...

Re: Improving suspension geometry?

You're running a 23" tire? I'm surprised you have any ground clearance. Where are you measuring the chassis height? Measuring near the center of the LCA on the subframe. These blocks are 5.5". http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s177/bse53/bcfc931d-630f-4f82-bb71-ec3c640fc39e_zps869a80f7.jp...

Re: '88 front wheel bearing/hub upgrade

Fiero's aren't unique to this problem. You'll find the same issue with the C4 vette. Ron Sutton at lateral g forum devotes time discussing the inadequate stock bearings on the pro touring cars. The spindle idea sounds like it has merit. Even finding a hub that would adapt doesn't mean the bearings w...

Re: Shock Valving, Spring Rates

Since the idea of the Koni rod threads being lengthened isn't possible, the next option was to create an extension. Like this: http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s177/bse53/17ecc6e7-49b9-416f-baf1-49f468ace8f6_zps46889668.jpg the threads on the Koni's are 14mm x 1.5, so I'll weld a bolt onto a nut. ...

Re: Shock Valving, Spring Rates

Received the Koni 30-5436. 5" stroke, 4 compression, 3-6 rebound. At first I wasn't sure they could be adapted, but if I can find a machine shop that can thread the rod deeper, I can turn it into a pin style. The threads are 14mm x 1.5 pitch. Koni lists the compression at 45 lb @ 2 in/sec, whic...

Re: Improving suspension geometry?

Formula for turning diameter:

Diameter=2 X wheelbase/sin(x)
x=steering angle.

So Diameter of 10* steering angle= 2 X (93/.174)= 89 feet
Diameter of 15* steering angle= 60 feet
Diameter of 20* steering angle= 45.4 feet

Hmmm.

Does this look right?

Re: Improving suspension geometry?

An issue that Series8217 raised was the total amount of camber needed in a turn. While we measure caster over a 40* range of motion, it's very unlikely you'll ever need 20* of steering angle for any turn- more like 10*. Anyone know how to calculate the radius of a turn based on steering angle, or co...

Re: Improving suspension geometry?

I think the limiting factor are the ball joints and the amount of caster. I suspect if I reduced the caster to 5*, I would have more compression travel at 20* steering angle. The upper ball joint is slotted, which limits the range of motion sideways. At least that's what I'm surmising. Before I rais...

Re: Improving suspension geometry?

Alternatively, you could measure from the floor to the height of the center of the hub, post that number, and continue quoting "chassis height" as you have been... although you'll have to be more specific about what you're measuring to when you quote chassis height. Knowing your hub heigh...

Re: Improving suspension geometry?

I found a source for rod end heim joints in the 14mm-1.5 pitch from a store in the UK. Would you mind posting the manufacturer, vendor, part number, etc. to the "Hard to Find Parts" thread? Will do. it will be difficult to make the Koni's work. The top eye has a 2" shoulder, which ma...

Re: Increasing steering axis inclination on '88 front suspen

Yes. I'm still waiting for the Konis I ordered that are slightly taller than the present shocks, so I need to raise the mount slightly and change to the eye end. I will probably do something similar to what you did for your lower shock mounts. I'll have to work around the stock UCA, which would be l...

Re: Improving suspension geometry?

I may increase the caster once I get some tire temp. data. I want to keep the camber at 1* or less to maximize straight line braking.
