What format are the CAD files used to make the parts? You could probably make some money by producing parts designed by other people. Just make sure that people understand that what comes out of the machine is what *they* designed (so that they won't be pissed when it's wrong :la: ) and you could ma...

I might shoot him an email or PM -- I was hoping he might see this thread. I don't think that making the rear window from lexan will take away from the streetability of the car, though. As long as you do a good job cutting out the holes for the bars to go through, and seal the holes to the bars (gro...

Just go with steel. The hub should be small diameter and the cams turn at half crank speed, so there really isn't much in the way of moment of interia reduction by going with aluminum. There at least used to be a belt conversion for the Quad 4. It may not be available anymore and when it was availa...

I oughta know... I came up with the concept and designed that hub. The bearings are '92 Z28 Camaro. Yes, '84-'87 fronts only. At least you're not the typical Fiero owner who faints in shock after looking at the price. What's mysterious about lowering the rear of an '88? You designed that? :afrocool...

Yeah, right now I'm thinking the best option might be to cut the centers out of the stock gears, leaving a few slotted tabs sticking inward. Then, have an aluminum "hub" cut out to go on the cam to bolt the factory teeth to. My only concern is loosening and tightening bolts into the alumin...

The chain is oiled, but I think that the only drainbacks are small slots above each cam, and the oiling for the tensioner. I wonder how much it would affect drainback if those were blocked off -- I forgot that was there until you mentioned it. I'm sure that external lines could be run if significant...

Timing belts vs chains

I'm trying to list the advantages and disadvantages of each, and I'm sure I've missed some things. I am just brainstorming for the Fiero -- I'm thinking about going with a smaller turbo (or twin-charging) and running much less power than the engine is built to handle. I figure since the engine has f...

Fiero space frame vs. Roll cage

I have a two part question: 1) I'm trying to decide how the space frame compares to a roll cage, mainly in terms of chassis stiffness. 2) How would the chassis integrity be compromised if a roll cage was installed and attatched to the bottom of the A and B pillars, then most of the supports for the ...

Spare tire?

Eh...keep it or lose it? I really want to do some work on the front of the car, namely reshape the front compartment. I also am looking into different brakes, which the spare may not fit over. Who no longer carries a spare? "Fix-a-flat and a cell phone" -- I have heard it said but do you r...

Can anyone think of cars with pretty light brake calipers? Or, aftermarket rotors and calipers could be used. How about aluminum spindles? Maybe Corvette stuff could be adapted, but then you have kind of an awkward bolt pattern. Has anyone tried replacing the door bars with tubular stuff? Wilwood c...

I just decided to bump this back up -- this summer I plan on making another header, so I will probably use that time to cut the trunk out and hopefully make a fiberglass replacement, or something simpler and lighter out of sheet metal. I've dropped a ton of cash into the engine/trans already and don...

One thing that has worked well for me was to talk to the guys who race big tracks -- I've gotten free autocross tires for my GTI, my Fiero, and my Audi that way. This guy let me dig through his trailer full of old tires....oh man if I had 18" wheels that could handle 275s I would be in business...

Zinc plating

Have any of you sent bolts and random hardware off to have it zinc plated or something similar? I have tons of cam tower bolts, and they all look like crap. I would really like to clean up a set and have them zinc plated -- I think nice shiny bolts with a zinc color (havent decided on the reddish on...

I wish I could pull some info off of the top of my head for you -- I remember my dad talking about a lead he had on a 2.4L engine, but I don't know if he ever picked it up (yes, we end up with lots of free engine cores that way haha). If he did, I can take some measurements for you when I finish exa...

There's been a good bit of discussion about it on Quad4forums. You basically use a Quad4 block for the larger bore, then use a Twin Cam crank. The crank journals for the 2.4 are larger, so you can either line bore the 2.3 block and use 2.4 main caps and bearings, or you can turn the 2.4 crank down t...

I'll have to get my buddy's notebook -- he wrote the stuff down while my instructor was going over the proof. I know some of it comes from integrating formulas that include area. I also think that it assumes the laminar flow is parabolic, but I could be wrong about that. I'll find out.

Yup! It's probably a terribly simplified equation, but it (hopefully) accurately describes how much changes in surface area will affect pressure drop across a given length of pipe.

Re: Is this correct? -- Volumetric flow vs. pipe Diameter

I thought that gas flow through an orifice was proportional to the square root of pressure difference... I haven't really studied fluid dynamics like that so... Under what assumptions are these equations developed? Anything about magnitude of viscosity relationship of viscosity to velocity? Also, h...
