Re: Engine Technology Thread; starting with dimpled pistons

This doesn't mention dimples specifically, but the level of modeling used for modern combustion is astounding. https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkcy5idXp6c3Byb3V0LmNvbS8xNTM4MTg4LnJzcw/episode/QnV6enNwcm91dC0xMTcxMTExOQ?ep=14 There's probably still some witchcraft left to figure out, b...

Re: NA 3900 Build

I recommend running the sensor wire alongside the alternator cable back to the battery. Very little current flows through the sensor wire, so it will have an accurate read of the voltage at the battery. Lots of current flows through the alternator cable at high charging rates which causes a voltage ...

Re: Group buy: Front Lower Spherical Bearing Shells

I hadn't considered the axial tolerance issue for a monolithic control arm with two bearings. Makes perfect sense. The ones from Afco above are for a single link rear control arm. I suppose you could supply a kit with undersized spacers and a set of shims to align a control arm to a specific subfram...

Re: lz9 3900 V6 buildup

13.1 is barely enough to keep the battery charged. The alternator may be fine but there could be a big voltage drop due to corroded or insufficient wiring to your fuse panel or ECU. I got a huge improvement in performance from my charging system by running the alternator sense wire ("S" te...

Re: Group buy: Front Lower Spherical Bearing Shells

Will, do you plan to make a press-in version? Any reason something like this design wouldn't work with the Fiero arms?

Re: '88 wheel bearing and hub upgrades

This is a K6145 mount ring set on top of the 88 Fiero lower control arm for reference. Looks like it wouldn't be a big deal to cut the end of the stock control arm nose with a hole saw to drop one of these in and weld it.

Speedway Motors part number 910-34820

OD is about 60 mm (1 3/8 in)

I hope you mean undersize! :-D

I guess the engine and trans come out the bottom together with an engine compartment view like that.
The front clip unbolts and everything comes out the front of the car.

Re: '88 wheel bearing and hub upgrades

Hopefully will have some metal parts before spring. I've tried this Chinese place for machined-from-billet parts that should normally be cast (lots of chips), and these guys are dirt cheap and reasonably quick: https://www.sh-proto.com/ Not sure I would trust them with regards to ultra-precise thin...

Re: '88 wheel bearing and hub upgrades

Outer tie rod and UBJ are for a C4 Corvette. The outer tie rod fits on the stock Fiero inner. The C4 UBJ shares the same bolt pattern as a K5208 upper ball joint but has a longer stud taper to work better with an aluminum upright. Lower ball joint is K6145 with a steel taper adapter sleeve to incre...

Re: '88 wheel bearing and hub upgrades

Successfully test fit the C8-based knuckle! Same part can be used on left and right sides, just a different steering arm. I have arm designs for rod ends (with adjustable bump steer) and a stock taper-style arm which you can see here. Outer tie rod and UBJ are for a C4 Corvette. The outer tie rod fi...

Re: '88 wheel bearing and hub upgrades

You can keep the one piece design and the production process you'd envisioned by keeping the arm straight, but moving it outboard. The outer tie rod boss would then be a projection in the inboard direction from the "flat" steering arm. Incrementally heavier? Yes, but it solves both the pa...

Re: Shock Valving, Spring Rates

Wholesaler closeout doesn't necessarily mean they're discontinued, it just means some warehouse is clearing stock. That said, it could be discontinued in this case? If so get em cheap! Correct that it is one box per strut. You could alternatively use NAPA NCP 2643609 which has a separate washer for ...

The above swaybar endlink image is actually part of a set of images I took for scanning. The 3D model looks like this when sharing space with the new knuckle. swaybar-endlink-clearance-scan.png I've been bouncing back and forth between integrated and bolt-on steering arms. Since clearing the swaybar...

Re: '88 wheel bearing and hub upgrades

The thinnest load bearing part of the current knuckle design is nearly an inch thick. I'm printing the test fit prototypes from ABS with 3.6mm shells and a lot of infill. It's definitely not deflecting from a few pounds of caliper and hub. I can split the ball joint bosses (layer adhesion failure) b...

Re: '88 wheel bearing and hub upgrades

Test fit the 3D-printed knuckle on the car this weekend. Minor interference between bottom brake caliper mount and lower control arm right at full lock and full bump. I will rotate the brake caliper mount up by a few degrees to clear here. This would likely not even be an issue for most setups -- I'...

The new wrap will be a geometric pattern but it won't be camouflage. Going to design it by hand in Illustrator.
