Re: 87 Fastback L47 Chump Car/ Lemons Project.
I went nuts with my plasma table and the 1" dimple die. The fist control-arm went pretty half-hazardly, I tried to line the holes with the holes in the control arm. http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b361/FieroWannaBe/ChumpCar/IMAG0032_1.jpg The second I had only enough scrap to make the brace 2...

Re: The Mule rides again (sort of) - pics.
How much stiffness and how much deflection exist in the mounting ears for the control arms? I feeling like your axial end play concerns may be a bit over-analytic, considering (especially at the front lowers) manufacturing tolerance of the sub-frames, sheet stiffness and the amount of clamp load. Mo...

Re: The Mule rides again (sort of) - pics.
Both types require 8-16 RA surface finish on the shaft, so I'll have to use precision ground rod and drill it--NOT fun since precision ground rod is typically hardened in the neighborhood of Rockwell C60--for the 12mm through bolts. McMaster does list "tubular shafts" with precision groun...

Some stuff that was done today: http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b361/FieroWannaBe/ChumpCar/IMAG0022.jpg I never liked that the boxing of the cross-member wasn't complete across the bottom. So, with the use of CAD... (that's Cardboard Aided Design for those techies out there) I cut the trapezoid ou...

If you have a 4-1/2 angle grinder and a MIG welder, don't let anyone tell you something isn't possible.

Re: suspension engineering.
I apologize if I implied anyone was being elitist, I enjoy the back and forth question and answer sessions, because they allow both sides to analyze the other's thought process. I don't think you gave that impression, but some people at some other forums seem to think that is an avoidance type of a...

All those are the books I'm talking about. I forget Carrol Smiths books, they are a really good basis for sound construction techniques, even if the cars he refers to where the pinnacle of technology 40 years ago, they don't differ enough to be irrelevant by any means. http://farnorthracing.com/tech...

Re: suspension engineering.
My recommendation here is to start at the source of the problem, and not focus on the path. The problem we face is accelerating a mass of a certain dimension package across a paved surface. Definitions: Acceleration is the rate of change of velocity. At any point on a trajectory, the magnitude of th...

I don't have any pictures, But the first generation caravan had bolt in stub axles in the rear that accepts tapered bearings (and a 5x100 bolt pattern hub) Here is a thread showing some of this type of assemblies: http://www.turbo-mopar.com/forums/knowledge.php?title=Brake-and-Wheel-Systems:Rear-Dis...

Re: '88 wheel bearing and hub upgrades
NTN offers wheel hub specific engineering advice in their catalog: http://www.ntnamericas.com/en/website/documents/brochures-and-literature/catalogs/hub_bearings_4601.pdf Unfortunatly they list R7 for the housing fit. I do not know of a R7 ISO fit standard, I assume they mean P7. ***correction: here...

Re: '88 wheel bearing and hub upgrades
If you will be farming this out to a machine shop, they would be able to verify starting and finished dimensions for you. And not only that, you can verify a current calibration on their measurement hardware, and measurement process, if you choose to be that anal, and demand a print-process-review b...

Re: '88 wheel bearing and hub upgrades
I need to get a tool to measure the ~72 mm bore with 0.005mm accuracy. I dont think VW's are manufactured to that accuracy, do you really need it? You are looking at least a 250-300 Outside micrometer and a T-bar. T-bars are not ease to use accuractly. An inside micrometer, just as difficult to use...

Documentation showing Drum Hub cross reference to Chevelle, Chevy II and Camaro hubs, for people looking to replicate the swap known as the Corvair hub swap, I'll refer to it as the GM short spindle swap:

Re: 87 Fastback L47 Chump Car/ Lemons Project.
If you look close you can see there is an undercut on the face of the flange,The backside has a generous radius leading to the flange. I did have to shave about .005" off the hub to get the Vette rotor to slide over the pilot. I will modify one of my tools to cut a radius into the pilot at the ...
