Re: Off the deep end, for fun

I was thinking more like making a big hole in it, right at the base of the window, hitch up right through the new deck. It might also need a notch at the top, since it extending a couple inches past the new glass reduces the angle of driveway dips it could do without hitting. But this notching would...

Re: 1985 AMC Eagle wagon build

What about the viscous part? Is there anything about it that seems advantageous to you, for ANY application?
Slip yokes can be combined with double-U-joint-style CVs, front only or front and rear, but how much angle can an Eagle have?

Re: Off the deep end, for fun

Gotcha.
So, does anyone either agree or disagree with the POSSIBILITY of this being made to work with a gooseneck?

Re: 1985 AMC Eagle wagon build

That sucks: forced to have viscous, plus no slip-yoke output which reduces un-sprung weight.

Re: 1985 AMC Eagle wagon build

Is it 28? I'll go check, but I believe it's 27.
The GM transfer case seems good to me. You could do the full-time AWD like the Sy/Ty, or have a 2.72:1 low with push-button. Both of these are aluminum-case. And both are left-side for the front diff. If this is of any interest, it's the NV231.

Re: Off the deep end, for fun

In '88, There was a notchback option for the GTA. You could order your new GTA as a notchback, from any Pontiac dealer. If I can get one of these, even a modern copy, then I can have the gooseneck without having to go hatch-less. Here's a link to some good pics: http://www.gtanotchback.com/pictures/...

Re: Off the deep end, for fun

Now the in-trunk stuff is mostly mocked-up, the next part is getting under the car, and adding some steel to anchor what you've seen. I started on this last night. First, I measured the actual subframe rails, they're 2.5" so I got some 3"x3"x 0.25"-wall square mild steel tubing, ...

Re: FD3S RX7

Are you brain-damaged, or just being a wise-arse? Put those sticky tires on the stock R1, it'll do 1.3g. But your James-May act is missing the point. The R1 is like the original Ford Lightning, and the '79 T/A WS6: Once the perfect combination of spring rates, bushing durometers, anti-roll bars, sho...

Re: FD3S RX7

The value of the rare R1 option wasn't the stupid BS like dual oil coolers, cloth seats and no sunroof. It was that it would do 1g right off the showroom floor. That means the suspension was right, and shouldn't be changed in any way at any time for any reason. Nothing to be gained by trying it.

Re: Off the deep end, for fun

Why not use a 5.9 cummins turbo. You will be similar displacement and RPM, plus a turbo off an older 12V would likely suit the engine best. The 12V would also be gutless without the turbo. The 96-98 12V was rated at 180hp, but that was completely stock. The turbo is capable of a lot more with diffe...

Re: Off the deep end, for fun

You're going to put a single 14G on a 350ci? Is 14G the common name for the turbo used to get the early-'90s Eclipse to 210 HP? Assuming so, then don't think about cubic inches, think about airflow. Don't think 350 cubes, think 105 HP. Putting a 14G on a SBC 350 may be absurd, but putting it on a 1...

Re: Off the deep end, for fun

The broken cranks and the main bolts being too short was only in the early years. The '82-'85 versions had better cranks and better main bolts. And for emissions-legality, I can only use '84-'85 versions anyway. But determining build dates from cast-in codes on these is fairly easy.

Re: Off the deep end, for fun

I'm not sure I can be okay with 150 HP, even if it does get the best MPG. And it's nowhere near as common. So plans are for the Olds 350 diesel. Then I can get the ARP Pro-series head stud kit, 184-4003, $147.46 and the Victor-Reinz head gaskets. 2 choices here; the somewhat proven 3736, which is 0....

Re: Off the deep end, for fun

I had a thought: Doing the 200 HP 4.3 swap, just because it's ultra-low-emissions, is sort of stupid: If I want a boosted gasoline V6, why not just get the '96-'02 Camaro with the 3.8L? The only thing my '84 can have that the later cars can't is the Olds diesel. I asked Mr. dieselolds for more input...
