Damping isn't perfect; you won't get full travel for more than one cycle; the dampers (shocks) attenuate the frequency at a pretty consistant rate (it's a logarithmic curve, iirc)--but there will be residual movement for n-periods after the initial jouce--at least, it seems like that for any automo...

Links? Sorry, I meant to post it yesterday: http://www.rqriley.com/suspensn.htm Do you know what damping is and how oscillators work? If you have your damping right, your suspension motion from any disturbance shouldn't persist beyond 1 complete cycle. Actually, yes! I knew all that fucking around ...

Well, that's easy to test. Bore out a hole in the head, put a fiber-optic lens in it, and hook it up to a high-speed camera. Run the engine and check out the before and afters at a consistant RPM. If it's doing anything, it'll show up. So, anyone want to volunteer an engine, and a $60,000 high-speed...

<insert video of Mach10 giggling and making "blbbl-blbbl" noises> So... while we're on theoreticals: I can "set up" the suspension to be safe at a given speed using the above equations. What implications are there for harmonics at 1st and 2nd orders below this "tuning freque...

Ugh... Math... So, the natural period would be the distance the car travels over the road for one cycle of the suspension's natural frequency? An article I just read describes the Natural frequenc as: NF = (188 / [sqrt(Static Deflection)]) Where Static Deflection is the distance travelled ...

How do you figure? I never said big or comfortable--not sure where you got that from. "Stable" is a relative term. I'll settle for "controllable." What I don't want is a compliant suspension built for a bigger, heavier car turning this thing into a ditch-seeking missile...

Word of the day: Fasciculation

I'm sitting here, watching in horrified amusement as my left bicep does this neat little jig under my skin. It's like watching a small rat run around under a blanket. No tingling, no pain, just the mildly uncomfortable sensation of some part of your body doing something that it's not being told spec...

Still waiting for my book to arrive, so I won't be able to start crunching some numbers until then. However, after a bit of reading, it looks like my design has a shorter wheelbase than an early MG--by nearly 6 inches. I am thinking that perhaps this might have an effect on it's straight-line stabil...

Aaron: It's DESIGNED to run with any one sensor out--assuming the rest of the motor and sensors are to blueprint spec.

Don't know if you've noticed, but the real world isn't quite that warm and fuzzy. What YOUR car does when you unplug a sensor is neither relevant or useful to this guy.

I doubt that that's true, Mach10. Lets say the 18' of 1/0 is made up of ~1k strands each of which is a ~.005" thick strand of copper, coated with platinum. Not claiming to be 100% accurate here, but with the individual strands that small, a HIGH estimate would be ~10% platinum. If the wire is ...

Well, I've started modelling the body in CAD... I'll get a scan of the sketch and/or a 3d model as soon as I can. It should be interesting. That big bastard of an engine is basically going to dictate the final size of the car, which on paper looks to be proportionally around the size of an MG-D. I n...

Factory plumbing in the TDIs is pretty ratty, though; the chargepipe cloggs shut within 50-60,000k though. Funny enough, this is a GOOD thing; Look around for really rough/sucked out TDIs, and take a compression tester with you. If the car runs like a shitbox, but has good compression on all 4, you ...

Pull it out, let it get to "room temperature" and check it against a thermostat or reasonably accurate thermometer... Check against this table here: http://www.slantsix.org/articles/dibiase_efi/chart.jpg You should be within 5% or so. The car SHOULD be able to run without the MAP, albeight...

Slightly O/T sidenote; I'd like to bring up the contest between Nikola Tesla and Thomas Edison in the "Current Wars." Thomas Edison was a brute-force inventor; he didn't have an extensive math or engineering background. His "proofs" were trial and error, and he would not necessar...

You pick up at least 5 efficiency units if you skip steps 1 through 4.

Professional cheezburgr-eaters don't do it, so logically it must be both beneficial and safe to do it full-time with no training or safety equipment.
