pics of iron head combustion chambers

I had a junk head here and wanted to experiment on it. One, to see how far a runner could be ported till breaking through the wall, and to see how much clearance there was in the chamber to port out to the gasket.

This is a 3400 aluminum head gasket on a head from a 2.8. Of course the iron head 3.4 heads are the same. I might have these flowed to see how many cfm is added by modifying the combustion chambers to help unshroud the valves especially on larger displacement 60 degrees.. I think its worth a few cfm at minimum, and if I had to guess, I would say noone who ports their heads does this mod.

You can see here how much extra material there is that can be removed on where the gasket fits

Stock valve and no mods to this chamber. You can see how close the valve is to the wall. Thickness is about that of a nickle

Here you can see material removed. I was able to fit 2 nickles after the chamber mods.

Thought of using a de-shrouding cutter in lieu of hand porting?

I know machine shops have them, I don't plan on buying one. But yea, a shop can do it like this. I was just showing what can be done for a shadetree mechanic.
