EMX's 91 Galant VR4 updates, parts and pics

Post by EMX5636 »

I've been working on this steadily since I purchased it almost a year ago. I purchased it all stock, except for a 2.5" Cat-Back. Drove it for about 2 weeks, then tore the whole car down for a build. It's been a few stages so far, trying some things out and whatever.

I have the build lists and a bunch of pics at work, so tomorrow when I get there, I'll update this. Anyone has any comments, suggestions, or questions, feel free. Thanks!

The car has looked pretty much the same since the first build. Only the engine and turbo setup have really changed.

First engine was a 2.3L Stroker Using a Eagle Forged 100mm Crank. Eagle had a bad batch of them, and of course I got one, so within 26 miles it torched the thrust bearing in the block. The crank was pulled for a Hyundai G4CS Nitride Coated Crank. I was still using the Ross Stroker Pistons, and Scat H-Beam Rods. I didn't like the Stroker setup as much as I thought I would, and after approx 2k miles, the engine was pulled in favor of a built 2.0L

My first Turbo setup was a Precision SCM61. Basically a non-BB Mitsu Bolt on 35R. Unfortunately, when the thrust bearing went, it sent metal into the turbo, and wiped it out pretty quickly. I threw on an old Mutt Stg3 (similar to a 50trim) just to get the car running again. Clutch was an ACT 2900 and Fidanza Flywheel.

This current engine, which I am still trying to get ahold of a turbo for, is a little sweeter. Its a standard bore, Non-turbo block 2.0L. Mitsu Polished crankshaft, RNR Aluminum Rods, and Wiseco Coated 9:1 Pistons. Still the same Head from before. Lightly polished, standard size valves, Crower Springs and Ti Retainers. Crower Stg3, (approx 280* duration) Metal HG and ARP Everything.

Transmission is a moderate street/track build. DSM First gear, Double Synch Second, HD 3/4, 4Spider Center Diff. I'm using a new stock 1/2 fork, and a BM/Turbotrix Billet Aluminum 3/4 Shift Fork. Custom shimmed by me at work for 9K+ shifts. Now behind an Exedy Hyper Twin Disk.

Don't the DSM guys like the GVR4 first gear because it's taller? Why would you want the DSM first gear? Is that a TRE gearbox?

A build I always wanted to try is a 2.4 block with high pin stroker pistons and a 2.0 crank. The taller deck and higher pin allow room for 12mm more conrod, which helps the Mitsu engine's atrocious rod ratio. The end result is a long rod 2.1 that should be able to take ridiculous boost.

How does the Exedy compare to the ACT?

Will- The VR4 first is taller, but also slightly weaker. I've personally seen too many stripped Galant 1st's. I've done a few 50-60ft AWD burnouts with it, no breakage thus far.

The trans is built at my work JNZ Tuning. We do pretty much all the same stuff TRE, Shep etc does.

The 2.1 is a very popular engine right now. Main problem is custom piston/rod costs. They love to spin 9K+ without a problem. It's cheaper/easier to find parts for a 7 bolt 2.1L setup, mostly cause EVO guys are doing most of the R&D behind it.

The Exedy is definitely a bit grabbier than the ACT setup, but also lighter on the foot (also lighter on the thrust bearing). Main problem with the ACT setups are they are full size PP and discs. Sometimes they can be hard to shift at higher RPM's because of the inertia. It's rated at the same 500-550lb. ft. that the Exedy is however.

Few engine pics.. I don't seem to have any decent full car pics, so I'll try to take some today. Here's a crappy one for now

This was before the engine was put back in, I got the whole engine bay painted. Almost 20yr old white engine bays almost always look like shit!

You work at JNZ? I didn't know that. Cool! I've ordered parts from you guys quite a few times.

GVR4s are cool; looking forward to the build.

Here's a crappy cell phone pic. I have a car show/event to go to on Saturday, so hopefully I'll have some quality pics from that.

And here's the new round fogs. I actually like them more than the stock trapezoidal projectors.

The Mutt Turbo wasn't up to the task I was asking of it, so it got upgraded. I am now running a FP Cast Race Exhaust mani, and a Borg Warner/Bullseye S256. Faster spool than a GT35R, with basically the same power potential. Not ever BB either!

yeah, they are a little pork-ish weight wise, but they have a ton of potential. Sad thing is, since the Evolution 1-3, Evo's have been getting bigger and heavier as well. A stock evo9 weighs more than the vr4's IIRC. That's the whole reason Mitsu went from the Galant to Lancer/Mirage Chassis for weight savings.

Just an update. Got some tuning done, and finally got my Water/Alky installed. I'll try to get an estimated HP later, but I'm assuming mid-high 400's at the wheels at 28psi. Gonna crank it up to about 32-33psi probably by the weekend. That should net me close to my 500-525whp mark that I was shooting for. For being a big, leather couch... it's got some go! :good:

Found some specs:

E39A Galant VR4 - 3,250 curb weight
EVO 1-3 - 2,730
EVO 4-7 - 2,965
EVO 9 - up to 3,285 (depending on options)
EVO X - up to 3,527 (depending on options)

Now, granted the new EVO's had a lot more "electronic" goodies than the VR4. They also make more power. It's just weird to see the progression.

Honda Civics used to weigh 2400#... now they are close to or over 3000. Mjatas are now as heavy as Fieros. The ZR1 at 3300# is a lightweight supercar.

Yup, everyone wants a nice plush quiet interior, power accessories, safety equipment etc etc. All that stuff adds up big time. The general size of cars seems to be getting bigger as well. A new civic is a lot bigger than an 80s civic.

BTW, very cool car. I don't know if they were sold in Canada. I can't remember ever seeing one on the road.

I don't think any of them originally made it to Canada. Hmm, never thought of that. They only exported ~5K of them. 3K total going to the States in 91 and 92. I think most of the rest of them ended up in Europe/UK and Australia.

The Mirage in Japan was the Lancer. And yeah, our 93-97ish 4 door mirages are lancer EVO 1-5 in Japan with a wussy drivetrain and FWD. We are actually doing a 95 mirage at work right now using 1G DSM and EVO-3 parts.

Well it's been about forever. I changed up the whole turbo setup. I blew up my Borg Warner about 4-5 times before I had it rebuilt and sold it. Now I'm running a Precision Billet 5857 Ball bearing turbo on a one-off T3 topmount manifold by JMF and finally some "street" boost dyno charts.

These are a couple pics with the Bullseye BW turbo. I guess I haven't taken any yet with the PTE.

But at 31psi on pump gas, it put down 508awhp and 394 tq. I have to get some things with the methanol injection squared away, but I'm hoping for near 600whp (570-580 goal) on 34 or so PSI on pump/meth. I'm almost maxing this turbo now, so I'll have to see if I want to upgrade to the 6262 Turbo.
