WTB - 96-97 LQ1 Intake

Post by mugsman »

Looking for a 96/97 intake system -upper and lower plenums, fuel rails, etc.
My parts engines are all pre 96 and parts I have will not fit the 97 - should have joined this group earlier and figured that out!
Thanks for your help

Are you wanting to swap to the 96-97 for performance? Or just trying to get it together and running?

The 96-97 are better for performance, there's little doubt about that, but the earlier ones will be easier to find. I like the 96-97 better for maintenance as they are easier to remove and remove in sections, but they also block the back 3 spark plugs so the intake has to be removed to do plugs. But you shouldn't need to swap plugs but every 50,000 miles or so at a minimum.

I've sold a few of those setups in the past. I don't have one for you, but let me offer some advice. The EGR tube comes off of the "rear" exhaust manifold, and is very hard to get to when the engine is installed in a W-body etc. I've noticed in the past that most people who are selling an intake setup sawed through the EGR tube rather than disconnect it properly. So, when looking for a setup, be sure to ask about that tube if you plan on retaining EGR. If its cut you might be able to haggle on the price some if you don't want EGR.

Thanks for the replies.
I have a 97 crate engine and gathered up a couple of parts engines to supply the needed parts to complete the long block but both are pre 96. Need the 96 97 intake components to get it up and running.
Thanks

I think I still have mine. I'll post pics and info here when I have time to get around to it. Might be a week or two though.

I guess you completely skipped my question. Why do you want the later intakes? The early ones will work, and will be a lot easier to find.

Keep in mind the lower and upper intake manifold gaskets are different, you need to get the later gaskets for the later intakes or the older ones for the older intakes.

I guess some of my confusion was due to information indicating that only 96 97 intakes would fit the 96 97 engine. Didn't realize that earlier ( pre 96 ) intakes could be used on the later engines. Are the intake ports the same?

No, the intake and exhaust ports are different. You can use the old intake though, it won't be a problem. I'd just get the newer; I think it looks cool and its tuned differently than the older intake, which will work better with the fuel tuning in the stock 96-97 PCM. The difference between all the revisions between 95 and 96 were 5 horsepower and 5 torque. Not a big change in any respect.

The intake ports are close enough to be the same, the early manifolds will fit and function perfectly.

The later intakes will be better, but I doubt you'd really notice a difference, the later intakes just won't fall off as hard north of 6,000rpm.

The '96-'97 lower has all the ports in a line and would be easier to fab a new upper (if that's your goal) than the early lower.

He's keeping it... Just returning it the 3.4 DOHC motor to stock/smoggable form.
