Mobilizing

Post by The Dark Side of Will »

I've been mobilized. I'm going to Afghanistan for a year to work with an Embedded Training Team (Google it).

I report in the 3rd week of May for three months of training and will be in the 'Stan by the end of August. 15 months total.

FYI.

Fuck. Well, I'll give you the advice I've given everyone going over there... Trust no one. Keep your head down.

I think we need to give you a proper sendoff. With balloons. And steaks. And hookers. Actually forget the balloons and steaks.

That sucks Will. On the other hand, you can't complain about the pay checks.

Spanks! I've already had a couple of Chicas promise me "proper sendoffs", but the more the merrier!

Thanks. Whether it's believable or achievable who knows, but I have a schedule layed out to get The Mule on the road with the new engine by the 15th. I'll get to pimp it for a week.

I lived in Pensacola for three years. Why on earth would I want to go back to Florida?

For those of you who missed it, this summarizes a recent PM exchange:
Me: Hey The Shizzaun, want to make a road trip to race me at this dragstrip in Maryland on the third weekend of May? I'll show you how a V8 is supposed to run.

The Shizzaun: That means you're coming for Florida, right?

Me: That means I'm inviting you to swing through MD.

The Shizzaun: That means you're coming for Florida, right?

Etc....

Embrace the suck.
I was a lousy salary negotiator when I started this job two years ago, so ironically I'll be making more money in the military... Senior LT's and LCDR's don't do half bad.

Thanks. I'll have kevlar and titanium armor... Hey... talk about SciFi... I'll basically be Robocop, only still alive and without being half machine.

I'm sure you can go TOO if you ask nicely. I want to go. I'm looking forward to it. I think it will be a great opportunity. It'll give me some sweet resume candy when I get back and maybe open the door to going back to the 'Stan as a contractor making twice as much money while staying inside the wire.

That's a good attitude to have. Do you know what you're training people in?

Stay safe and keep us updated when you have the chance.

I'd recommend keeping the balloons and steaks, as long as the steaks are actually blow.

Stay safe over there.

Yeah, I would like to get deployed. I figure somebody has to do it. Why not me instead of some guy with a wife and kids he'd be leaving at home. I think I have one of the few jobs that doesn't get deployed though.

Oh wait, I forgot that I'm at a deployed, trigger-pulling battle position right now... :)

Quantum Physics - they need someone to run their supercollider.

Seriously though, stay safe over there.

Yep, you're on the front lines of the push-button war... Air Force Stylez, j0!!11!eleven!! ;-)

Don't have any w&k's, so I'm a good candidate for mobilizing.
Unortuantely that means no heirs, either :-( Gotta get back in one piece to spread combat proven war hero/rocket scientist DNA.

The Plan is only that from which we deviate

Post by The Dark Side of Will »

The Plan is simply that from which we deviate.

In early Feb I put in a request to redesignate to CB's.
In late Feb I got my mobilization orders.
About 3 weeks ago, I received word that my request had been accepted.

So now I'll be going to Iraq for a year working with the Army Corps of Engineers at the end of July. I'll be in Columbia, SC from the end of June through the end of July.

In preparation for doing CB things, I need to learn how to be a CB. I'll be in Port Hueneme, CA for three weeks starting on the 17th. After that I'll be in Abuquerque, NM for about two weeks, then off for two weeks and then to Columbia.

I'm not going to be doing that anymore (I think...), buuut... In teaching people who've never been in a military or police unit how to do things that only a unit can do, probably the biggest thing would be teaching them how to be a unit. However, since they're largely subsistence farmers, a great many of them will probably need to start with learning how to tie their shoes (not joking). They're also largely illiterate, so written instructions are useless.
