Thanks everyone!

I've had a couple of strange moments since I've been back.

I've been staying at my parents' house in small town VA. I almost had a heart attack for about 1/2 second driving out of "FOB Small Town" with no weapon, no armor, in a soft skin vehicle, with no comms equipment... but then realized it's OK to do that now.

I felt very apprehensive passing an abandoned vehicle on the side of the road.

I still get the creeps when I see raw copper hanging around. We NEVER throw out scrap copper because the bomb builders get it and use it to build EFP's...

I was at an art show today where one of the booths was making "recycled art". They'd take recyclable materials and make cute things out of them. One thing they used a lot was copper wire to hold everything together. I couldn't look. I had to walk away.

It's my turn to go to Afghanistan.

I'll be in the greater Kabul metropolitan area working on facilities engineering and construction program management for the Afghan national security forces.

I'll be reporting for prep about the beginning of September and in country about the beginning of October

I was also just laid off from my civilian job. The computer memory market is in a slump and the company is losing money and cutting workforce. I'll be paid through the end of July, then receive some type of severance, which for a 1.5 year employee will probably amount only to liquidation of my unused leave (at 50%, of course). I have some money coming in from the Navy so I'll be fine financially until I report for mob.

That just means my schedule has opened up considerably for finishing my house & garage projects and progressing on my car projects before I leave.

First week of October. I still have a week of "decompression" time in Germany... during Oktoberfest. I know. It's hard.

Got back Thursday last week... The Rotator flew us into BWI and then the Navy had a bus ready to run us down to Norfolk.
