I won't be at any of those.

Yes I am lame. No I never claimed my fiero to be a mile racer.

Will I do it someday? Maybe. I have no plans to do it in 2011 though.

It's only a half mile, but head's up racing instead of single-car runs.

This isn't far from you, Shaun! Is the beast ready to turn tires in anger?

The Mojave Mile runs twice a year:
http://www.mojavemile.com/

April 10, 2011, and October 8-9, 2011.

I went last year and it was awesome. There were some 200+ mph RX7s there and the Big Red Camaro (google it).

That's an annoying website (big red) and the engine section doesn't seem to work, as it doesn't have any info about what's under the hood.

Ninja Edit: http://www.hotrod.com/featuredvehicles/ ... index.html found a little more info...

So I was just running the numbers...
With a 7000 RPM redline and 3.94 gears, I should hit 39 MPH in first, 63 in 2nd (2.19:1), 100 in 3rd and 135 in 4th (1.03).

The question remains: Do I want the car to be a mile racer bad enough to install the 0.81 fifth instead of the 0.72 fifth when I take the trans down to install the 3.94 final and EP LSD? I'm thinking no.

with the .81, I'm guessing around 168mph while with the .72 it would be 189mph.

At 70mph, the .81 would be around 3000rpm while with the .72, it would be around 2600rpm.

Tires are currently 255/50-16, probably to be replaced with 245/50-16.

255/50-16's have 774 turns per mile. 7000 RPM works out to 191 mph with the 0.72 and 170 with the 0.81.

Turning 7000 through the 0.72 gear, the trans output shaft will be turning over 9700 RPM!

I think a .81 would be better suited. I can't see your fiero getting up to 190mph. Not a diss either, but unless you are doing something to your engine I don't know about, I don't think you will have the power to even get you there within a miles distance.

I know it won't get to 191 in one mile. I know the 0.81 will benefit my terminal speed (but not ET) significantly.

The question is: "Do I want that terminal speed enough to accept the higher cruising RPM and lower gas mileage that the 0.81 would give me the rest of the time?".

Have to decide how much of a toy the car is.

One nice thing about the 0.81 is that the engine is wound up and ready to go in 5th for weaving traffic. However, the 3.94 will make a significant change in that direction also.

IMO, I would go with the .72 5th. That is based on how I use my Fiero which is primarily a weekend cruiser now. I preferred the 2.93 chainset over the 3.29 that I have in my car now (Although I really wish I had a manual).

I think the question you need to ask yourself is how much time are you actually going to spend above 135mph? Outside of standing-mile events, I can't think of too many times, even on race tracks, that you will be driving above that speed.

So, with that being said, I would say that if you plan on driving your car to your auto events, use the .72. If you are trailering your car, use the .81.

-edit for horrible grammar.

yea 135 mph at the top of 4th is high enough for any highway fun. Things are usually over by that point anyways. I say go the .72 for better fuel economy, esp with todays prices. The 3.94 FD will give better acceleration then current 3.61 anyways so might as well get some better mpg out of it all.

Saw this and thought of this thread: http://www.autoblog.com/2011/03/28/vide ... #continued

If you head out there, Will, let us know. If I'm anywhere near the race, I'll try to make it out there.

I've seen a similar vid with an FD3 taking a tumble. I won't be anywhere near 200, but I might be close to 150. And it is a Fiero.

I already know I'll choose to trailer the car there because I might be compelled to trailer it back.

Maxton Mile is by far the closest, and they have an event in Oct, which is probably a reasonable time frame considering the pace at which I've been getting things done.

I'm targeting the Maxton event on 24/25 September with the 29/30 October event as a backup. Also looking at the Texas Mile event on 21-23 October.

I'm looking at having the car down for the month of August for the next round of hard part upgrades.

For that I intend to:
-Disassemble my EP limited slip so I can have it and a 3.94 gearset cryo treated
-Get 3.94 gearset cryo treated and REM polished
-Replace crankshaft in Northstar (I'm not happy with the journal work on the current crank)
-Install and degree 266 intake cams in exhaust locations

Exhaust manifolds, new ECM, intake pipe and similar tasks mentioned elsewhere will be accomplished in the interim.
