Salvaged Title Fiero

Post by LeppyGT »

So heres the quick and dirty info. My 87 GT was hit three days after I bought

it. The guy slid into me in the snow, wasn't going very fast. All it did was

leave half an inch crack marks on my front bumper and quarter panel, and a

half inch gouge on my hood above my headlight. Of course, the insurance

company totaled the car, and I was forced to get a salvaged title, because

I was not about to get rid of the car. My question to you guys is, is if I WERE

to sell the car, what would my honest chances be of getting at least SOME

money out of the car? Anyone had this kind of experience? I'm asking

because I feel that if I can't sell the car for enough, because I've put 3k

into it, I'm just going to start modding it. Because if I can't sell it for

anything anymore, I might as well as keep it until it completely falls apart

and have fun with it. What do you guys think?

You don't have to hit enter... just keep typing.

Got pics? From your description it was barely nicked.

Just keep it. Even if it weren't a salvage title you'd get next to nothing for it. It's a Fiero.

Sorry about the spacing...I have kind of have slight OCD tendencies,

and for some reason I can't help it. I hate clutter, and if I don't space,

I get the heebiegeebies. If its honestly annoying, I'll stop ha. But yes,

I do have pics, and he actually slid UP the hood, so it didn't really do much.

My worry is, if I go to sell it to someone who sees it has a salvage rebuild,

they are going to think it was badly messed up. But it did absolutely

nothing to car really. I already have replacement parts, I just need to

install/paint them.

You need to switch insurance companies... That is NOT a writeoff. You can buy a new hood for a couple bucks at a yard and paint it. That is nowhere near the value of the car.

If you can get out of it, don't let the insurance company put a salvage title on it, that is BS.

Talk to them and show them some pictures. I can't believe they would write the car off...

Wow, what would happen if a large insect hit the car, would that be a writeoff under the wildlife insurance? That is nothing.

That's a completely BS. That should absolutely not have been a write-off, especially the way the rest of the car looks.

Well, I'm glad that other people do agree with me on the bullshit of the insurance company's call on this one. I tried arguing it, but I basically got jerked around because I'm a kid. I've wanted to switch companies for a little while, but I'm under my parents insurance, and I can't quite afford to go off on my own. I tried arguing it though. I sent him pictures, prices, blah blah blah. They basically told me they'd have to find the parts themselves, otherwise they couldn't guarantee the parts when the put them on my car. For just my hood, they said it would cost $1,000. Not installed, not painted, just the hood itself. Its been quite a while since this happened, so I don't think there is anything more I can do at this point, but it is depressing.

You can't buy a new hood from GM anyways. Tell them to show you where they came up with the $1000.

I have a silver hood in my garage, if you were closer I would just give it to you. I'm sure you can find someone in Ohio that has a hood you can buy for cheap or free.

Take a drive to a local yard and see if you can find a fiero, buy the hood and say to the insurance company that you have another hood and only needs to be painted.

Frigin insurance companies... :cussing:

Well thank you for at least the thought. I do have new parts, I bought them from a local Fiero nut. Got the hood, front bumper, quarterpanel, and new headlight assembly for $100 bucks delievered to the door. He is really helpful.

They said they'd have to charge me the $1,000 because the fact GM doesn't make parts anymore and they'd have to find one they could get and guarantee. Retarded in my personal opinion.

Don't let them write off the car, go as high up as you need to. Slapping a salvage title on your car will mess up the resale value. They don't "have" to put down the $1000.

Your car is obviously worth $3k+, depending on mileage and options. If you paid less than that for it, you should get it appraised and insured for the right amount. It would prevent things like this from happening.

I have $20k into my fiero, I don't have it appraised so my insurance company would only give me book value. I also need to get an appraisal done.

What insurance company are you with?

Sounds like it's time to join the military so you can have USAA insurance...

There ought to be some sort of appeals process with Ohio's equivalent of the DMV. Expect it to be difficult to find out about, bureaucratic to execute and full of roadblocks in the form of uninspired hourly types who couldn't give less of a shit what happens to your car.

Yeah I definitely know what you mean. I'm 18, only dealt with them on less

than a hand full of occasions, and I can't stand the people. Its like talking to

jar of paste.
