New PB in 1/4 mile (New again on 8/16)

Post by AkursedX »

Went to Lapeer today. I was a little wary of my times because I've head Lapeer is a slow track. Plus when I got there, I found that there was a sustained 20-30mph headwind the ENTIRE day.

So, I got in about 8 runs and here is the best:

RT: .726 (.500 is perfect)
60ft: 1.818
1/8: 8.225
mph: 90.61
1/4: 12.742
mph: 106.23

All of my other passes were between 12.82 and 12.80 and the mph were 105-106.

In talking with some track regulars, pretty much everyone was down 2-3 mph. There was a C6 vette that couldn't trap faster than 110.

My previous best was 12.959 @106.1 mph, so I cut almost 22-hundreths off my previous best. I'm excited about that, but I'm even more excited to know that I still have potential for more in better conditions!

Here's the obligatory timeslip:

I ran a modded Mach1 Mustang. The guy immediately came over to the car to find out what was done. He couldn't believe he lost to a Fiero.

I didn't feel like starting a new thread but I was comparing scans of my 1/4 mile runs and some previous scans that I had during my tuning sessions.

I came across some interesting results (to me at least) about how much environmental factors can affect speed.

I shift into 3rd at about 91 mph and most of my runs went up to 108 mph which was probably a little past the 1/4 mile mark. I know I had the same type of runs on my tuning sessions and I wanted to compare the time it took me to accelerate from 91-108mph. I really wanted to know how much the headwind affected me.

My best time at the track was 4.086 seconds to go from 91-108. On the last scan that I did for my current setup, I covered this in 3.495 seconds!

That's a .591 difference! Now I know these are all computer numbers, but still, a 1/2 second difference is huge!

So wind can have a pretty big effect on peroformance. I can't wait to get to the track again!

yea headwind is huge.

That is a pretty quick mach 1. Did you find out what mods it had done? For being slow it had a slightly higher trap then you.

The Mach-1 was n/a. He had cams, ported heads, headers, a different intake manifold, cai, and a nice-soudin exhaust. The thing sounded great running down the track

I saw the guy run a couple of times before we ran and I was suprised by his times. I know he cut a 12.9xx later in the day.

Ok , don't take this as a Flame , or bashing...

But why is it 3.8SC's always have low trap speeds? is it the tranny?
Fuck you Shaun , one day those little boys will talk and when they do you will get yours.

it is the tranny and the gearing that slow it down. people with the 3800 and the getrag if they can keep it togethor generally trap around 3-5 mph higher with around the same mods.

It allows it to get off the line quick, but slows it down on the top end.

Just like my old 3 spd 125C in my 85 gt. 1.8 and 1.9 60' times on stock street tires, but only trapped 90 mph in the qtr mile all while running a 14.1-14.2 I would run 75-76 mph in the 1/8th mile, but could only pick up 15 mph the last 1/8th mile. no top end.

My friend traps mega high with his getrag...

Its just applied WHP really.. And some because we lose a bit of our power when we shift down into that 3xxx RPM area. Manual transmissions are just significantly more efficient.

BTW, akursed, you have plenty of tenths you can still be knocking off of there. When you finally get 23-24 degrees of timing in the thing, youll know what I mean! I would bet if you have trouble getting that, i would look right at your exhaust, Ii really is time for a "race" exhaust or headers.

Good to see your having luck with the HPT! Remember to invite me out next time and I can help you crunch some numbers with your setup. I am doing some wheel hop mods, and getting my 20+ timing race gas tune made slowly but surely.

Went to Milan today. My best was 12.785@106.94 right off the street after tech. The 60ft was 1.86 which was the best of the day. I could not hook worth a shit. Track prep was terrible, plus I only got 3 runs in three hours and then it started raining. I think I'm going to stick to Lapeer. I prefer getting more runs in.

My other two times were 12.89@105.94 and 12.88@105.61 with 1.94 and 1.93 60fts. Crappy crappy.

I kept on getting 1-2* of kr all the way through 3rd gear. I'll have to figure out what's going on with that. I think I am also going to work up a tune for my 3.25" pulley. I want to see what more timing and less boost will result in.

I had about 30 people talk to me about the car. They were mostly impressed.

I also ran into the kid I sold my Mustang SVO to last year. He's definietly taking care of it. He added a BOV and had the turbo rebuilt. It was his 1st time at the track and he was in the 15's.

The new wow factor is with v6's with forced induction homie. Seriously v8's in fieros just don't command the same type of positive attention that boosted v6's do.

Congrats on the new times. Your car is quick mang.

you on the 3.0 pulley for these runs?

I had a couple of people who mentioned to me that they have seen northstar's at the track, and one SBC with a tpi was mentioned. I did have one person ask me if I was going to put a V8 in and I had to explain to him the issues with doing so and how they never really perform well anyways. But overall, people are always impressed with it. I had someone tell me "This is the first cool Fiero I've ever seen" and a couple people who said that "they should have built them that way from the factory"

And yeah, I was running on the 3.0 pulley, and 94-octane.

Finally a decent mph!!!

Anyways, I've been doing a ton of tuning lately. I have found places where my timing had great rooms for advancement. I reworked my whole map, and took out a little bit of fuel and voila! The car has been running excellent and is noticeably stronger.

This was done on 94 octane. The run was virtually kr-free. I also ran a 12.672@ 107.96 and a 12.732@ 109.84.

My 60ft was a tenth off of my best 60ft. So if I could get that down, a 12.5xx might still be possible.

Nope. It was a pretty last minute thing this morning. I got home from work at 8am and couldn't get to sleep, so I decided to go racing instead. The only thing I did was drop from 38psi in the rears to 21psi.

I'm hoping to go to ZZPerformance's track day at the end of the month and for that, I will ice the intake and run some straight 100 octane.
