How much to charge for a 3.4 DOHC swap?

Post by Aaron »

Guy wants to bring me his 1988 2.8 Fiero, and I swap in a 3.4 DOHC V6. I'll need to do the whole swap, including wiring harness and exhaust build. Anybody have an idea as to how much should I charge for labor?

I know the swap well enough, but it's still a time consuming job. I'm not looking to rape the guy, but I'm not doing it as a favor either. I can't remember how much I charged for my last swap, but that one was much different as I had the engine swap already done in another car, so it was more or less a drop out, drop in to the next car. This one will be a swap from the ground up, using a crate motor.

I can't honestly do that for a few reasons. First, it wouldn't be fair because I work slowly sometimes. I like taking breaks, I like having drinks nearby, etc. I spend far more time than necessary. Secondly, even being honest about it it'd be through the fucking roof. Simply put, engine swaps take a lot of time.

That and I feel I'd shortcut things to keep his cost down that way he isn't outraged. And I need an estimate for him.

Meter maid not working out for you? Why do a swap for someone else to begin with?

Throw out a number? $2000 + parts/materials.
That's would be an "I owe you a big favor" labor rate.
