When I was younger, I used to talk to pilots a lot because I wanted to become an airline pilot. An old WW2 pilot told me that engine used to be the Achilles heal of the P51, that the coolant systems were very easy to compromise during combat, and that the plane's were going down in number because one shot to the nose of the plane was almost a guarantee loss in coolant pressure. He had transitioned from the P47, which by his account was almost indestructible in comparison.

I imagine putting a radial engine in a '55 would be impossible though. Not that he's being shot at to begin with.
