What did you do with your 3.50/2.19/1.38/1.03/.81? You still have it laying around?
It's probably in my parent's garage somewhere or I gave it to the guys at WCF. Do you still want it?

Unlike the guys with solid mounted powertrains and 30# flywheels, I haven't blown any up. Lemme look at what I have and figure out what I want to do over the winter.
-I have a HTOB bellhousing.
-I have a new in box HTOB.
-I have 3.94 + EP LSD.
-I may go ahead and install everything at once.

Do you care what throw out mechanism it uses (external arm vs. internal arm)?

If there is nothing wrong with it, and you can find it, then I would be pretty interested in it.

I would prefer external like the fiero to make swapping back and forth a quicker and simpler process, but I am open to using what I can find.

So Will, are you saying since I have a 6# flywheel on my tilton setup I won't blow a transmission?

If you need any contacts to adapt stuff to your Northstar let me know.

I just measured this little guy at 80 ftlbs of break-away torque.
Jeff is about to disassemble it for me. I'll ship the gears--along with a 3.94 R&P set--to a specialist--probably Liberty Gears ( http://www.libertysgears.com/metal%20enhancement.htm )--for cryo, maybe tempering, shot peening, ISF/REM polishing, etc.
Once that's done and Jeff reassembles, I will check it again to see how much the polishing dropped the break-away torque.

When I install this one and remove the Gr8Grip, I'll check that unit for comparison.

I'm trying to combine one of the new Opel Silhouette (quad 4) NVG T550 transmissions with my original Fiero Getrag 282. I wanted to use the Fiero first, second, and fifth gear ratios while using the Silhouette third, fourth, reverse, and final drive. Of course, I'm also trying to use as many of the new parts like synchros and bearings.

Everything seems pretty straight forward with one exception. The output shaft has a different bearing design for first gear, and it's not immediately apparent if the two designs are compatible.

This is the 282 output shaft. Note the diameter of the first gear bearing surface (next to the final drive gear).

Image

This is the 282 thrust bearing that first gear presses against and the roller bearing that goes under first.

Image

This is the T550 output shaft. Note the diameter of the first gear bearing surface (next to the final drive gear) is stepped down to accept a bearing with larger rollers while using the same gear bearing surface ID.

Image

This is the T550 thrust washer that first gear presses against and the roller bearing that goes under first. You can see these are significantly different designs. The ID of the thrust washer is the same as the ID used in the roller bearing from the 282, and the washer thickness is very similar to the stack of bearing assembly from the 282.

Image

The critical dimensions seem to measure out very similarly with my cheap digital calipers, and I'm expecting to be able to use the 282 first gear with the 282 thrust bearing on the T550 output shaft with T550 first gear bearing.

Has anybody tried to use a 282 first gear on a T550 output shaft like this? I haven't been able to find any discussion on it, and I'm a bit nervous to experiment with this gearbox. I was hoping somebody else was the guinea pig instead of me.

I haven't put it together yet, but I have that style bearing and thrust washer for my 3.94 output shaft. I anticipate no problems.

I didn't know that was T-550 part... I thought it was a 3.94 part.

I don't have any 3.94 282 or other T550 gearboxes to compare, so you could be right; I hadn't considered the possibility as the service literature (published for the earlier 282s) I have shows the thrust bearing only (so I assumed they omitted this and used only a thrust washer as well as the updated first gear bearing later). Where did your 3.94 shaft/bearing/thrust that looks like mine come from? As in, what vintage transmission?

Like I said, it *looks* like it will work. I'm hoping somebody else has actually tried it to confirm or deny.

Pretty sure mine came from a Quad4 application, but I don't remember what year.

The part number for the 3.50 first output gear is the same for the entire production run, right?

I guess I should also mention the 282 first is a 3.5 and the T550 is a 3.77 in case that affects bearing/thrust designs as well. I'll see if I can find part numbers for Fiero and later T550 applications to compare.

Can you confirm that 3rd is the same on the Fiero 282 as the Silhouette T550? (1.38:1)

Ratios I measured in this Silhouette export transmission are:

1: 3.77
2: 2.19
3: 1.38
4: 1.03
5: .80
Final: 3.94

Thanks. For reference, the Fiero Getrag 282 (MG2 option code) is:
1: 3.50
2: 2.05
3: 1.38
4: 0.94
5: 0.72
Final: 3.61

So for your hybrid you're looking to use 4th, reverse, and final from the Silhouette to get:

1: 3.50
2: 2.05
3: 1.38
4: 1.03
5: 0.72
Final: 3.94

That looks good! I certainly wouldn't mind a shorter 4th for mine. That said, a 3.94 final might make the difference alone.

I have 3.50/2.19/1.38/1.02/0.72/3.61 in my car now... the short fourth makes a surprisingly big difference, and really helps out the top end, especially if you top out third too regularly...

Will I thought you told me the first and second gears shared something and couldnt' be interchanged? I think the 3.77 first is rediculous and would want the 2.19 second and 3.50 first but I could have sworn I remember reading that wasn't possible. Maybe I have the wrong pair of gears?

I may have said that before I actually found one

There were three input shafts made:
3.50/2.05 Stock Fiero & V6 FWD cars)
3.77/2.19 W-body and minivan V6 models, later Quad 4's)
3.50/2.19 Early Quad 4 cars... I think I got mine from an '89 Beretta. It's pretty rare. I really like it, but for Steven's use it makes 2nd gear too short. YMMV. My limiter's at 7k and I just clear an indicated 60 mph in 2nd (with 3.61 final).

The only combo not made is a 3.77/2.05.

First and second are part of the input shaft so they can't be interchanged, but most combinations were made.

I tried a 3.50/2.19 input shaft and while the 1st-2nd shift is awesome, 2nd-3rd is horrible and ruins it. I took the trans apart and built one with the 3.50/2.05 set, which is what I'm using now.
