CLUTCH!

Post by SGT.ROCK »

I think my clutch is going bye bye now. When coming to a stop and down shifting from 3rd to 2nd it every so often would grind, but not all the time.Well I was at a stop sign in town and I thought I was in 1st gear and I went to take off and it started grinding.I pushed up on the shifter and it wouldnt go any further than it was at first, then I got pissed and rammed it and it went in and it made the car shutter. It did this a few more times on the way home.I pulled into my driveway and tried to make it do it again but I couldnt. So I drove around my neighborhood and low and behold it did it.Has anyone changed out there clutch? Is it hard?and can it be down with hand tools? What special tools do I need? And who makes the best clutch?

I would bleed the clutch line first, make sure it isn't just air in the system. That would cause clutch release problems also. That fix is free and doesn't take nearly as long as a clutch job. Also, make sure your clutch pedal isn't bent, the stock ones are kinda weak and tend to, which will also decrease your pedal travel and thus your clutch engagement.

:withstupid:

Its not your clutch, if it were you could do it with hand tools, but its a lot of work, you have to get the tranny out.

Bent clutch pedal, air in the clutch line, or leaking slave cly, could be the problem.

How do I bleed my line? Any links on how to do that?Should I replace my pedal just for the heck of it?Where do I look for a leaking slave cylinder? My clutch fluid level looks good.I guess It could be those things because it pulls real hard (for a 175,000 mile 2.8) in all four gears. Thanks for your responses. :thumbleft: I'm really bummin right now.My wife is gonna kick my :bootyshake: and I dont mean bootyshake.

Would someone post me a pic here of the shifter cables and slave cylinder on there 4-speed V-6 where they are connected to the tranny? I want to see if there is any difference between yours and mine because I was told this car had the clutch replaced which it kinda looks like it but I'm not totaly sure. Thanks.

How are you going to tell if the clutch was replaced by seeing a pic of hte shift cables?

When a clutch goes bad it slips. When the hydraulics are going bad it grinds because you aern't getting enough travel on your slave arm to move the TOB enough to disengage the clutch fully from the flywheel.

You don't need your clutch to shift btw. I have driven around many time and shifted without using the clutch. Only prob with that is you have to shut the car off at a light to get it into first gear. But you are good after that.

I am willing to bet your slave cylidner is bad. Go buy a rebuild kit for it. Take it apart and polish the inside with 600 grit sandpaper. Reassemble it with the new rebuild kit and bleed it. It should work perfectly then.

Well my step dad came over lastnite to help me bleed my lines. When we were finished he didnt think there was any air in the lines. So he took a look at the slave cylinder and noticed this epoxy lookin stuff on it.He wanted me to take it off so after I changed the oil in the car I took it off and noticed the mounting bracket was broken and they put that epoxy stuff on there to hold it on but it doesnt look like it sets in the braket right so I was going to just order a new bracket and slave cylinder. While underneath my car removing the old oil filter I noticed the cradel shock wasnt bolted to the frame so I found a bolt and fixed that and hopeful my engine wont move as much.I wanted a pic of someone elses car so I could see if whoever owned it before me cobbed up anything else so ai can try and fix it. Oh ya after he bleed the lines he got in the car started it up and pushed the clutch in and put the shifter in first and the car moved forward alittle tellin us the clutch isnt engaging all the way, right?

You mean disengaging. :salute: If the clutch does not disengage the car will creep in gear.

Thats correct. Your clutch is not disengaging properly. You need to pressure bleed the clutch hydraulics, and probably replace the slave seals.

Thanks for the correction. Is there an adjustment on the two cables going to the transmission? Just wondered because one came off the ball and the things that the cables are attached to look like you can loosen the nut and adjust ever so slightly.

There is some adjustment in them, as some of the mounting points the balls the cables attach to are slotted. You need to have someone operate the shifter so you can see which direction you need to adjust the ball to get more travel. If your cables are stretched or worn it would be best to replace them. www.rodneydickman.com sells excelent replacemnt ones with metal ball cups. These won't pop off like the plastic ones can and they come preset for your application.

Well I just replaced my clutch slave cylinder and the mounting bracket then blead the system and that didnt help.So I went to Home Depot and bought a bolt that was a little longer than the one between the slave cylinder and the rod actuater or what ever.I grinded the bolt down to the shape of the old one but just a tad longer and installed it,I fired up my car and went to shift to first but it started grinding so I got pissed and pushed the clutch in and just started going from first to second back and fourth as fast as I could move the shifter and eventually it started working,so I took it out on the road and everything was well accept that it grinded while down shifting from 3rd to 2nd but not all the time just if I was going a little fast when down shifting. So i figure I'll take it to a friend of mine that works on trannys and have him take a look at it and I'll start saving my pennies to get it all replaced :la: Thanks for your alls help.
