'88 rear wheel hub separation?

I'm trying to separate the rear wheel hub but noticed there is a nut (29mm?) that seems to go to the axle. I know for the hub removal I need to use a puller tool to separate it but not sure if I need to remove the axle nut first?

Thanks

On the small pattern (5x100mm) hubs, that's a 30 mm nut. It's tightened to something like 150 ftlbs.

Put a pry-bar through the lug studs and then use a big breaker bar to break the nut loose. It's a self-locking nut, so it'll be stiff most of the way out.

You'll probably have to put the assembly on the floor and push down on the breaker bar to get enough leverage to break it loose.

Do NOT use a puller to seperate the hub. It's is a sealed unit. You need to remove the 3 bolts behind the flange, and remove that large center nut you have highlighted. The entire wheel bearing unit will come off as one piece. There are no serviceable parts inside.

Good catch.
Once the nut's off, just tap the axle out of the bearing with a hammer and unbolt the bearing.

Does the 88 use a different size nut, IIRC it was a 32mm on my 86.

Should be 30 on all 5x100's. Maybe there's an aftermarket bearing that comes with some other size, but all factory's are 30.

Now the 5x115 hubs have 36 mm nuts...

Thanks guys. I took the part to a mechanic shop I know and with a air impact wrench it came off quickly.

Thanks... I did read that the hubs on the '88 are different then the previous years and regarding the separation here...

the 88 rear hubs are press-fit together!! This shows the flange portion turned upside down (on the right) with the backing flange bolted to it. The flanges can be taken apart from the hub portion, using a hydraulic press, or careful even pressure, and modified however you want. Then pressed back together after cleaning, re-packing, anything you want!!.
This is a big deal!!
Is this info wrong?

That information is correct. A puller will not take them apart though. You have to use a press.
Why are you taking them apart?
The front race is part of the flange, so you can't do anything to repair it if its damaged.
I suppose you could repack it if you don't trust the factory grease, but its pretty tough to get all the old grease out and replace it with new clean grease.
Are you changing the bolt pattern?

Might be able to get a damaged race hard-chromed.
