Thinking about buying an 85SE

Post by CincinnatiFiero »

Looked at an 85SE today. Duke 5speed. Runs and drives, clutch feels okay. Total pile body wise, bumperpad notchie. Has a sunroof but siliconed shut. I could probably remove the silicone and fix it. Car got hit up front (frame looks fine) but bodywork was replaced with red panels so the guy sprayed them flat black with a rattle can. Has a factory spoiler custom mounted (further back with nice big holes drilled into the decklid). 1/2 of a factory luggage rack, the outer rails were removed along with the back rail for the spoiler. Has a Mazda tapedeck... Interior is crappy in some places, seats aren't the worst I've ever seen, but the bolsters are green???? Power locks and power windows which work. Headlights are stuck up. 91,000 original miles. Got a new set of cooper tires on it with 14" steelies, guy is throwing in the 14" aluminum SE wheels with tires that look fine but just aren't holding air, so perhaps the beads are bad. Hes also throwing in some older good condition mickey thompson drag tires that could find their way onto my 3800 car. He wants $300. Thoughts?

My thoughts have been that you've always had too many Fiero's, pick one to build and stick to it. What's stopping you from DD'ing the 3800? I'll bet it's nothing $300 can't fix.

You've got: The white 84, the 87 3800, a jeep, a truck, and what else?!

Lexus RX330. Drove the 3800SC car today, I need someone to tack weld the part of the cradle mount in the frame rail that comes loose. Which is part of the 85SE deal, the guy works at a shop and he will get my frame welded. This car is a 5speed though and I regret doing a 3800SC auto, so I can pretend one day I will swap it too.

Get your cradle welded (less than $50). The five speed is likely an Izuzu, and if its a 282, it's still gonna blow up. Start looking for a 287. Another car is a waste of effort.

the 287 came on the ecotec and won't bolt up without an adapter plate. Even then you would probably have to do some weird shift cable stuff and hydrolic TOB stuff.

Don't buy that trash, instead pay someone to weld your cradle and spend the rest of the money on routine maintenance for the 3800 car.

if it runs and drives for $300... hell get it...

duke fieros in decent shape are going for 1000 most everywhere right now. With the price of scrap down, you could probably offer less than 300.

I offered $200 right then and there (like I had the cash in my hand) and he said no.
