Anyone make a two-piece valve cover mod?
Was thinking about this the other day, planning on doing a cam swap and one of the downsides of this engine seems to be the fact you need to get it dead right the first time. mainly the rocker adjustment.
Problem is, I've found conflicting information as to exactly how much the rocker should be tightened.
Which finally lead me to the idea, has anyone made a two-piece valve cover? Chop part of the top of the valve cover off, so it can be easily unbolted allowing access to the rockers?

I think some tool on piffle made 2 piece valve covers for their Fiero and then it burnt to the ground, may have to go back like 3 - 4 years to find that though.
FWIW, I've been using 3/4 turn on the 2.8 rocker arms on everyones Fiero's since these piles were still about new, never had any issues or heard any complaints from any of my customers.
EDIT: and why do these boards change correctly spelled p i e c e to piece?

Ive used 1.5 turns past zero lash with no problem on 2 motors. All your doing is getting the hydraulic plunger to depress slightly. Watch the lifters as you set the lash. remember .75 is the low end and 1.5 is the high end, the less you turn the more hydraulic slack between the plunger and the stop inside the lifter.
And even if you get it wrong, its only a couple hours to remove the intake and reset it.

I have access to a basic machine shop, was thinking of something a bit better than self-tapping screws and hinges :thumbleft:
So, 1.5 turns or 3/4 turn are both fine
Thats the info that was making me confused/concerned. I found a few arguments regarding those specs on piffle.
Last time I had my motor apart, I put it back together with 1 1/2 turns past no lash (like chiltons, haynes, and the 86 factory service manual said to). I got no compression, and the car wouldn't run. At that time everyone on THIS forum told me they thought the 1 was a typo, and to use half a turn past zero lash. I did, no problems since.

Why do they need to be adjusted so much the valve covers have to have doors?
Porsche sure as hell didn't have that on the 964's.
the queerness of Fiero owners never ceases to amaze me.... ever... the comments, the ideas... just all make my brain hurt.
I need to adjust the valves on my uber performance 110 RWHP V6!!!
Like shaun putting a $600 mani on a $500 junkyard 2.8... Pure classic Fiero.... God I hate shaun.

Fuck you Shaun , one day those little boys will talk and when they do you will get yours.
I wanted the option, as I keep finding conflicting info on the actual adjustment. Also, I currently can't check for a backed off nut or anything else for that matter. I developed a tick, only way to look at it is take all the crap out of the way first. My other cars it was a simple matter to pull the cover and start up the engine to see what was up.THE PUNISHER wrote:Why do they need to be adjusted so much the valve covers have to have doors?
