Shipping a Motor

Anyone here shipped a motor before? I need to ship that 4.1L I have to Houston. Who did you use? My father suggested R&L but I have not had a chance to call them yet. Does anyone have a ballpark on what a 4.1/4.5/4.9 weighs? The motor is sitting on a palette in my garage, what is a good way to secure the motor to the palette?

I have never done this before and don't know anything about how to go about it. Thanks.

You will need to build a box to crate the motor. Otherwise maybe build some fake "motor mounts" and screw it down to the pallet... Maybe get some ratcheting hold downs. If you can't lift the motor into a 36" high(?) semi bed, then you'll also need a lift gate. Otherwise you can specify door to door ($$) or terminal to terminal ($) service.

It shouldn't cost more than a couple hundred bucks

As long as you can tie it down to the pallet, I don't think you'll *need* a crate. It does need to be securely fastened to the pallet, however.

Coinage shipped me a 3400 middle of last summer. Fedex freight was a couple hundred bucks from PA to RI, terminal to terminal. He put the engine on an old tire on the pallet, secured it with cheap racheting tie-downs, and shrink wrapped the heck out of it.

R&L carriers quoted me $156.74 online, I am going to call them after work and see if that is accurate. Some guy on ebay wants it to replace his bad motor. Its a low miled longblock, great way to replaced a blown motor for $50 + shipping. I have the motor on a palette, I was going to tie it down with some string and maybe a ratchet tie down. I have an old tire I can throw under it. Anyone got a guess on the weight of this turd?

Just a hint, if your weight quote sounds even remotely believable, they don't check it. I've shipped more than a few motors with weights at least 100lbs shy, and they never caught or said anything. That being said, I don't know how much the weight impacts the cost. They could very easy have like a 200lb-500lb range at the same price, who knows.

Ground shipping is probably more dictated by size than weight.

R&L came to $195.10 with accurate numbers. The guy is cool with that number and is throwing me extra cash for time and travel to ship it, and he did my buy it now for more money. So I am happy, he is happy, we will do it this way.

I sold my TH125 into PA and he wants it shipped, so that will be interesting too. $150 to ship a $20.50 transmission, but its what the customer wants.

Where can I buy that shrink wrap that they put on rod or something and wrap it around a skid? I was told UHaul but I can never get through over there. Also, what is a good cheap way to strap stuff to the skid? R&L recommends those plastic bands, where can I get those?

Global Shipping Company wants $150 for air freight to Houston. I think we are going with that. I went out and got two brand new palletes for the motor and trans. I am moving this weekend so I won't get to ship until next week probably.

Motor got dropped off at Global on Friday. $150 to air ship to houston, and $20 to use those melt together banding straps and to shrink wrap the skid. 1-2 shipping time. I think thats pretty damn good. I think global is Cincinnati only, but I highly recommend them.

Shipping took 2 days, but no one from the receiver ever called the buyer so he didn't get it until friday. But we are both happy with the time and cost. Now I am going to ship a TH125 to PA.

Guy bought the wrong motor and reported ME for fraud, I think he is trying to scam me. Calls me and goes "Hey! This ain't no 85... 86-89 used serpentine belts and my car has multiple belts... and I took the valve covers off, she ain't got 45-50k on 'er, I want my money back!!!!" The item sold for $100 + $170 shipping and he gave me $30 for what he called "all my effort" I offered him the $100 back and he can keep the motor, stupidly before even looking into it. He sends a 'fuck you' 'you really stuck it up my ass' 'paypal is going to get you' etc. email and reports me for fraud to paypal. Said in his claim, it is not an 84 (well the ad says 85 so hes already wrong) because 86-89 used serpentines and his car uses multiple belts. I defrauded him and owe him all $300 back (mind you $170 comes straight out of my pocket) and he'll send it back FREIGHT COLLECT!!!! So I partsamerica'ed it today..... 83 and 84 do use multiple V-belts.... BUT 85, 86, and 87 all have the same SINGLE SERPENTINE part number... ass clown. I am going to respond through paypal that I offer NO REFUND at all. I offered my $100 refund over yahoo, so its not official and he refused it anyways. I think he just wants a free motor, OR he stupidly bought the wrong year.

He is going to leave me horrible feedback too! Oh noz, well I marked it as unshipped so he can't leave it until this gets sorted out, and if paypal rules my way can't I contact ebay and have them remove his feedback?
