Anyone got a lathe?

Post by CincinnatiFiero »

I need someone to make me a cylinder out of aluminum or something that they can turn down easily. We are replacing camshaft bearings in a friends truck, they only sell them for small block chevies and they are like $60, his budget is pretty tight now so I was looking to make what I need for like $20-30 and a thank you.

If someone can do it I can get the exact measurements.

It needs to be like 1/2 thick and about 40mm in diameter. With a hole in the center so I can attach a rod to hit it with. If its not too much trouble it would be best to make what summit has here, its two cylinders. One sits in the bearing journal before the one your hitting in to stabilize the rod. It has a hole through the center so the rod can pass though. Then on the end of the rod is the other cylinder to pound in the bearing, like a plunger.

At the very least I just need one 1/2 inch cylinder with a hole in the center so I can somehow affix a rod.

We removed them with a big socket, but since the center is open its hard to hit them dead on, so you get it sideways and drive the edge of the socket into the bearing and mess it up. We killed a bearing tonight and my friend had to buy another set. So I got the idea to make a tool. Any help would be much appreciated. After we're done you could have the stuff back and try to re-sell it on ebay or something. We need this soon.

How soon do you need this thing Cinci? Might be able to do it for ya if you can wait a week or so. Don't stop looking on my account though.

We were going to pursue using seal drivers as a better way to hit on the seal, but still use a rod and hammer. This week we are going to go buy a $12.99 set of Harbor Freight seal drivers and see what it will do. Keep us in mind though

If you post up or PM me the exact dimms you want I'll start eyeing around for material to borrow if you give me the go-ahead.

a machine shop should charge like $30 to just put them in. Its a 5 minute job.
