It's just a 4 door DSM...

Your sig says aluminum rods... srs bsns...

How do you keep a transmission in that thing? Magnus Dogbox?

Watch it Will... Us Galant guys get mad when people call them DSM's. :-x

I have RNR aluminum rods in it. I have to pull the pan and check the rod bolts for stretch soon, but I have about 15k miles on them so far. The trans is actually what I'm working on again now. I did a full refresh of it back when I put the engine in, then broke a 3rd gear shift rail last fall. I just buttoned it up to get the car back together.

I've been doing some research on Liberty Gear and their face plate modification. It basically builds a dogbox out of your existing gears. I would love to do a Magnus or PPG gearbox, but at 6k +, it's just not in my budget. Liberty will do yours for $80 a gear and $80 for a machined hub. So to do 1-4 will be like $720 + shipping. I might leave a synch'd First gear for better street manners, and I can save some money too. They are well liked by higher HP Honda guys and T56 setups. Lingenfelter has a set in their 1300w/tq new Camaro and it seems to be holding up.

And your 1st gear is holding up? I was under the impression that first would eventually shed all its teeth.

I had forgotten you had some build pics in this thread. Nice setup.

I've never heard of anyone checking rod bolts for stretch after run time... only on assembly/disassembly.

Aluminum rods do have a finite fatigue life, especially if you're spinning the engine fast, but that shouldn't apply to the bolts.

1st was replaced with a DSM 1st. Otherwise it probably would have. I think the rod bolts have to do with the expansion of the rod with heat. It just beats the bolts up.

The faceplating would eliminate any potential problems with synchros and grinding gears, but wouldn't do anything for the simple strength of the teeth. IE, it wouldn't help an Isuzu.

I figured someone would have made a super awesome first gear replacement by now, but if what you have is holding up...

4 bolt rear end?

The only first gear upgrades are the Evo3 and a straight cut dogbox setup. I haven't broken any teeth yet, so I'm hoping the face plating will hold up. Even if I have to replace a gear, it's only $80 to modify. I'm sure it's probably a couple hundred and a few weeks wait for a PAR or PPG replacement.

Yes its got a 4-bolt (soon to have a mechanical LSD instead of the stock viscous).

Haven't updated this in a while. I went to the track end of last year, only got 3 passes in the car (ever, not this trip) and it blows street tires off through second, but with a 1.80 60' and a slight second gear lockout problem, went 11.8@121 at 28psi pump gas. Was about 470whp on the rollers the previous week. I'm finishing up my trans and rebuilding the Exedy soon, so hopefully I'll get a full pass with clean shifts and an extra 40whp. If it doesn't trap close to 130mph, it's getting the billet 6262, I've already got a lead on one. Then I'm gunning for 600-630whp on pump/meth, and to just dip into the 10's. Still daily driven, had the A/C on yesterday cause it was hot as balls out. :-D
