Automotive primers

Post by whipped »

Can I use a rattle can automotive primer? Or is this generally considered a no-no?

I have some fiberglass quarter panels that I want to turn black so they don't stick out like a sore thumb. Eventually I'll take them in to get painted, but right now they're neon white gel-coat (I think?)...

I don't want to have to take it off prior to painting, nor do I want to buy a compressor/spray gun, so this seems like a good solution?

Rattle-can primer is good for temporary use. But when you get ready for the "real" paint job, you should have it sanded off. They'll have to sand down your temporary paint, anyway.

Another alternative would be to use an aerosol spray gun like mentioned above, and get some urethane primer from a local paint supply store. While you're at it, you might as well have them mix up some color coat, too.
