Starting a 2.0L w/ pics

Is the 2.0L more reliable?

I expect so. 2.5s tend to crack the block, due to that inherent thin spot. That happened to my Fiero's original 2.5 a month after I started driving it. When I pulled over, I had coolant and oil in the intake manifold and in the air cleaner. But this is just to power the car until I'm ready to reinstall the LSx/F40.

All the 2.5s I've bought had broken cam gears. The 2.5 is just generally crap, you planning some wild port work and a big cam on the 2.0l???? haha.

I've had 3 of the 2.5s, no trouble except what I already told. They can get decent gas mileage, but the n/a 3800-II can equal the mileage and double the power, though the weight is more. I'm not planning any mods to this engine, but I did happen across a mild cam for it. I didn't buy it, however.

Go to photogallery > my cars > 84 simply red coupe. His car has a 2.0L swap, may be worth contacting him if you needed help. As far as I know very few people have done this.

My dad did the exact swap in his 84. He used an 87 Cavalier motor, then put the Isuzu 5-speed behind it. It ran good, had about the same power as the 2.5L, but the 2.0L revs higher. They did revise the 2.0L for 87 though which is when they went to the flat valve cover.

I made the progress you're about to see, but first, I couldn't get the cradle all the way to it's stock position because the alternator is going where the hinge thing has been. I'm going to go with aftermarket racing-style hood pins, because that hinge box is also in the way of the LSx. So, here are the pics:

So while looking for hood pins, and finding that Mr. Gasket Company makes locks for them, I had an idea for a cheaper way to do it: Allen-head bolts. Even the best never-do-wells seldom carry allen keys, plus the time it would take, I'd be back outside with my groceries by then. Plus it wouldn't look as ghetto as just using hex-head bolts. So, that's the plan. Pics will follow.

So I removed the decklid, removed the hinges and springs, removed the engine/trans/cradle, and started drilling the spot welds. Now there's plenty of room. I'll get pics once the engine is back in position.
