Oh, so you would be interested in seeing. Well, cool. How about just PM-ing me a number, so I can send pics from my cell phone to yours? Because right now, that's all I can do.

Re: A thread for my 472? Trans Am
So a friend came to see me. His son has a problem with his dump truck.
It's a '73 GM C-650, with a tall-deck 427.
And from what the 2 of them said, it now seems to be a failure to use any ZDDP.
They have a supposedly identical replacement engine and trans, they want me to swap in ASAP.
And for my payment, I get to keep the hurt engine.
So I popped all 4 valve covers, and the hurt engine has both rockers off for cylinder 7. The intake pushrod isn't even visible. The heads are date coded 1972, and are also cast with "M TRUCK"
The replacement engine has heads date coded 1973, and cast "PASS"
I pulled those heads and set them aside. They might end up in my T/A, but they're not going in that dump truck.
Now, with a tall deck 427, I have some options and some problems.
The tall deck supposedly won't go with the A/C "box", or the wipers, or the power brakes.
But it can be bored and stroked past 570 cubic inches.
And to do a 496 would be easy: Scat crank, Speed-Pro pistons, and a set of 6.535" rods.
But should I keep this block? A low-deck fits better, can still go past 540 cubic inches, and could still be a 427.
The 427 displacement is like a Porsche 911 turbo: intriguing, but I just don't want it.
I want at least a 496.

And how exactly do you expect to pay for gas? That engine should get what, 13 mpg on the highway?

Go big or go home...
No more Cadillac big block aspirations?
Put it with a T56 and 2.73 gears.

1) I have the white '06 GMC Sierra 1500 WT. This one runs, every day.
2) I have the white '84 Pontiac Fiero 2M4. This one is secret, to avert criticism.
3) I have the umm..'84 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am. This one is just sitting with no engine in it.
4) I have the maroon '79 Chevrolet C-20 Custom Deluxe. This one is now getting the 6.2L diesel, should run in a few days.
That's all.

As I have the '049 heads, and am at 4400' elevation. I'm not going with a 427. Maybe if there were some small-chamber peanut-port heads, and I had the funds on hand for custom pistons, but alas and alack. No mega-domes for me.
Plus that 3.76" crank might be ruined.
And I can get a good used peanut-port 454 cheaper than I can get the longer rods to go with the tall deck.
But peanut ports are plenty for a 454. So do I sell the '049 heads? Or build a stroker?
So, the Speed-Pro stroker pistons are offered for 30, 60 and 100 over. 100 is just 4.35", so I can still go to 4.375" later. And 4.35" gives me 505 cubes, more compression, and better breathing. For this they list 9.6:1 at 117 cc. Fine.
Un-ported peanut-ports will support an easy 446 HP at 4900 RPM, with a 224 / 230 -110, 0.510 / 0.510 cam, and pull 5500.
Selling these '049s might just about pay for that. Tempting.
But what about the 550 HP I could easily have from a 496 with ported '049s and the same cam?
The only headers are 1.875", plenty for 550 HP. Too much for 446 HP.
I want the 505. I have the heads, which have taken me a long time to happen upon.

I don't think his car is going to be driven fast enough for it to be a problem. Worst case it'll just leak out some when it heats up. I don't think it'd overheat..The Dark Side of Will wrote:Actually, you *did* go way overboard on the grease...
