Looking for my next car, advice?

Post by Aaron »

I'm going to be looking for my next car here not too long, but I'm not sure where to start. My budget is around $20,000, though less is good!

Right now I've got my Jeep SRT8, my piece of shit 5 series DD, and my Fiero 3.4 turbo (Which is more or less a race car).

The sane part of me wants to buy a 2004-06 BMW 330ci, with a 6-speed. Good gas mileage (25/30), 235hp, comfortable, reliable, and fun. Or buy a newer Jetta TDi. Comfortable, more or less reliable, and 45/55 gas mileage. The mileage would be nice, but it lacks fun, and costs about the same.

The insane part of me thinks my 5 series serves me fine, and I should go buy the new BMW S1000RR. 193hp, low 9 second quarter mile off the showroom floor. The best sportbike ever built.

The other insane part of me wants to buy a really nice low mileage 88 Fiero GT, and do a high quality engine swap in it, something like a 3.6 DOHC from the Caddy. In addition I'd build the suspension, do a brake upgrade, etc. I will always have a soft spot for the Fiero, they are just fun to drive. This path is expensive, and will still end up with a sub-par performance car, even after I'm 20 large in debt.

So I don't really have a preference as to what kind or anything like that, just looking for some ideas as of now.

Exactly what are you looking for in your next car? Between the cars you have and the choices you mention, I'm not exactly sure what you are looking for. From a new BMW, to a TDI, to a sportbike, to a modded Fiero, you are all over the place!

You refer to your DD as a POS, so I would suggest looking for something to replace that. The BMW you mentioned would seem to be the most logical choice.

I'm considering replacing my E34 with diesel Merc for a daily.

The Mule and Bad Idea would be my fast/fun cars.

If the Bimmer 335D were in your price range, I'd recommend that. But it isn't.

I actually looked into the 335d, but they don't make it with a manual, or in the coupe. Stupid BMW, I'd buy one of those in a heartbeat.

The Europeans got it in coupe. In 2007-08, you could actually buy a 335d coupe with a decent looking tail in Europe. Then they brought it to the US with the sedan body-style, with it's shitty looking taillights and lines. Trolls.

The 335i with a stick gets: 17mpg city | 26 mpg highway ---- Not interested. I guess they figured there were more glutens in America than people looking for a purpose built car. Who cares about getting twice the economy right... ? 9/10 trolling.

All the MFG's keeping their cool stuff elsewhere is nothing new.

Even Ford and GM do it. The Escort Cosworth, HSV GTSR 300, Utes, etc.

It's like they don't think anyone who appreciates world cars lives in the US.

And the UTE was F@#$ing INVENTED here.

X2

If I could daily drive an R35 year round in a place that didn't get snow, I would do the same thing.
