I'm trying to spend money on things that will increase the value of the car down the road... That means spending real money and not cutting corners. I'm confident it will be worth it.CincinnatiFiero wrote: $7,200 is a lot of money Will, but potentially worth it. Can you see some of his completed work? I'd imagine that number will fall when you remove the trim yourself. When we have customer cars painted we go as far to remove all the glass from the car. I'd recommend that. But I guess if you're having it dipped it'll be about as bare as bare gets. And when they paint it everything will be blue so the car will almost seem like blue was the factory color since all the jambs, nooks, and crannies will be the right color.
Of course confidence if the feeling you have before you fully understand the situation...

For the sake of resale I'd paint it a factory color. You'll also probably get a better finished product if you don't go with some crazy 3 step process.

While I am concerned with resale, it's style *MY* car... and every other Ferrari on the planet is red. Mine will be blue
Besides, with the engine from a 348, I don't think I'll get much play on the originality card.
However, the three step process is a bit more finicky than the two step... I have confidence in the guy I'm talking to about it. He's an aerospace coating specialist. His first auto paint work was the FFR Cobra belonging to one of the quality inspectors who works here. I figure the fact that he could satisfy one of the most anal aerospace quality inspectors on the site first try says something about his work.

Re: Project Stupid Ferrari (Formerly: Another Awesome V8 swa
The only issue I see with those three-step finishes, assuming the person can apply it properly, is matching it down the road if you have to replace a body panel. It's VERY hard to get the same finish again, so you'll end up with a slightly different look each time it's painted.
Re: Project Stupid Ferrari (Formerly: Another Awesome V8 swa
I don't know that anyone's ever replaced a body panel on a Ferrari.

I suspect that at this point the only replacement body panels for 308's are on other 308's.
The 308 body is a bit weird anyway... it almost doesn't have "panels". I believe everything is welded (or bonded in the case of glass body cars) to the tube frame and basically the only removable parts are the doors and bumpers.

Engine and body are still at my dad's house.
I'm having some serious work done to my house and garage, and will move the Ferrari there basically as soon as the facility is ready.

Digging out of the financial hole from extended unemployment.
Need to mod the garage with roll up door, overhead hoist, better lighting and 220V power before I bring the car up to NoVA. I'm not masochistic enough to start on a project that's going to have me R&Ring that powertrain 3 dozen times using a cherry picker.
The building already has its own meter and panel, so the lighting and 220V power actually isn't that hard.

Also figuring out how to bolt up a 360 engine to a 355 transmission.

I thought you had a 348TS motor? Did you buy another toy? I was on ebay the other day, used Ferrari engines really are not all that unreasonable. I need to find a distressed 360 or 430 to redo and play with.

Re: Project Stupid Ferrari (Formerly: Another Awesome V8 swa
I do have a 348TS drivetrain. I'll do the swap with that.
However, it's nice to day dream about a Ferrari that has more horsepower than my Fiero
Mating a 360 engine to a 355 transmission is actually fairly difficult. First, you have to cut splines into the crank hub, as the 348 and 355 transmission input shafts spline directly into the back of the crank.
You then have to swap on a 355 rear cover, and modify (cut/weld) the back end of the 360 oil pan to mate to it, in order to correctly seal the input opening on the 348/355 gearbox
Because the 360 flywheel with crank trigger wheel is gone, you have to swap on a 355 front cover with crank sensor mounting boss and a 355 front pulley with trigger wheel. The 360 and 355 use the same front cover casting... Ferrari just machined the boss off for the 360 parts.
Of course the 355 crank sensor wants to be where the 360 A/C compressor belt tensioner goes... And on and on.
A 368 would definitely be a first of kind.

You need to just go buy a 458 and start driving your cars

Sell them to me! That's the thing I need to get into in the next couple of years. Houses, not 458s.
So refresh me, do you have a 348 drivetrain for this car? And are swapping g transverse to longitudinal?

Re: Project Stupid Ferrari (Formerly: Another Awesome V8 swa
I need them to make my fortune
Yes, I have a 348 drivetrain. Any talk of mating a 360 engine to a 355 transmission is either pure mental masturbation or for the distant future... haven't figured out which yet.
Yes, I will be swapping transverse to longi. The 308/328 drivetrain is a packaging disaster. Even for the dry sump powertrains, the engine sits on top of the gearbox and the gearbox is integral in the oil sump (They do not share lubricant).
The 348/355 drivetrains are longitudinal dry sump. The engine sits about 5 inches lower in the body than the 308/328 units. As in the Fiero, the forward firewall in the 308 engine bay is sloped, so the engine bay is longer at the bottom than the top. The 348/355 transaxles have a WEIRD internal layout that puts the differential right behind the engine and the clutch at the extreme rear. The combination of the shape of the engine bay, the lower engine placement and the transaxle layout means that the 348/355 powertrains fit in the 308/328 engine bays.
Several "358" combos have been built. The ones I've seen have made extensive changes to the 308 frame such that the 355 powertrain cradle bolts into the 308 chassis. I'm not going to do that. I think that with some fairly minor surgery to a couple of crossmembers and welding appropriate mounting pads to the main longitudinal frame members, the 348/355 powertrain can basically drop in. It'll have to go in without headers, which will then have to be installed in the car... which will be a bit of a pain. Timing belt service will probably sill be an engine-out operation, but it should still rock & roll.
(Most of a) 308 transaxle:
355 transaxle:
Although there are some detail differences, the 348 and 355 transaxles are very close to identical.
