1991-1993 3.4 DOHC V6 "LQ1" Technical Information

Post by Series8217 »

I found this gold mine in a vehicle information kit PDF for the 1992 Chevrolet Lumina (http://www.gmheritagecenter.com/docs/gm ... Lumina.pdf)

You can get the same data for other vehicles here: http://gmheritagecenter.com/gm-heritage ... -kits.html

These technical information sheets include extremely detailed information on the drivetrains and chassis. Drivetrain information includes some very nice information like the weights of internal and external components including the block, heads, camshafts, upper and lower intake manifolds, exhaust manifolds, pistons, and total dressed engine weight. It also includes operating fuel pressure and flow, water pump flow rate, and even such details as the clutch spring load, facing material, and number of rivets.

Chassis data includes spring rates, swaybar thickness, and suspension travel.

Here is some data for the 3.4 DOHC:

Using this datasheet we can compare the weight of the 3.4 DOHC (LQ1) to the aluminum-head 3.1 (LH0). The 3.1 didn't come with a manual on this car, so there is no weight information available for the flywheel. However, the flexplates will weigh about the same. The LH0 weighs 171.91 kg (379 lbs) fully dressed for an auto, according to the vehicle information file. The LQ1 weighs 450.5 lbs in the same configuration. That gives us a weight increase of 71.5 lbs for the 3.4 DOHC motor over the OHV aluminum-head 3.1.

What's heavier on the LQ1 that we can find on the spec sheet?

Upper + lower intake: +4.2 lbs
Heads: +10.6 lbs
Camshafts: +32.17 lbs
Exhaust: +0.9 lbs
Pistons: +1.8 lbs

Total: 49.67 lbs

That leaves 21.8 lbs of extra weight not listed on the data sheet. This must include the cam carriers (if they aren't listed with the "heads"), additional lifters, valves and valve springs, the timing belt, pulleys, and cogs, and the dogbone mount / engine lift mount (which weighs 5 to 10 lbs alone).

I weighed the 91-93 3.4 DOHC (LQ1) upper intake manifold with 20.0 pounds with the EGR valve installed. According to the specs I posted above, the upper intake manifold weighs 17.4 lbs. That puts the EGR valve at 2.6 lbs.

My shortened 91-93 intake (plenum removed and replaced with a pipe) weighed 9.38 lbs. It does not have EGR. The shortened intake is shown below:
