pmbrunelle wrote: Wed Feb 09, 2022 10:28 pm Since you're moving forward with wheel/tire/suspension parts selection, do you have an idea of what your weight distribution will be like, even though your engine isn't installed yet?

There are some other K-powered Fieros out there, so maybe those folks can tell you their weight distribution.
There are a couple others who have done it, but not many who have actually weighed their car and none with the same sort of mods I'm doing. There's going to be so much changing on this car in the first build that I'm ballparking the theory. I fully expect to change the balance of things down the road after I've driven the car in some track days and have a good idea of how it actually handles with the changes.

That said, the K20A2 swap with a relatively light flywheel, deleted P/S pump, and lightweight exhaust *should* drop 50-100lbs off the back of the car compared to the stock Duke with the 5 speed. I'll also be moving the battery to the front at the same time. My interior lightweighting will basically just be breaking even on weight with the roll cage going in, and that's all centralized in the car so shouldn't affect the weight distribution much. My wheels are pretty light (~17lbs front and ~18lbs rear), but the tires will be heavier than stock. Brakes will be 2 piece rotors so not a ton heavier than stock despite being much larger, and the calipers will be light Brembos which will probably be similar if not slightly lighter to the stock 88s. The suspension should shave a bit of weight off with tubular arms and links but not a huge amount. I have removed the spare tire, jack, and associated brackets from the front, but I'm also adding A/C components in which my car didn't come with (functional A/C is a requirement for me for summer track days).

My car is an 88 base model which supposedly is around 45% front and 2600lbs in stock form (I'll try to get it on a set of scales before yanking the motor to confirm), I'm expecting after all the modification it will break even on pretty much everything except the engine swap, so should come out slightly lighter than stock, in the 25xx range without driver. The weight reduction off the back and moving the battery to the front should put me around 47-48% front.

My tire choice is limited partly by what sizes are actually available in the compound I want to run, so I'm going with a 255/275 stagger (48% front) to start with. I would ideally do a 245/275 but 245s aren't available at the moment.

Some more mostly cosmetic stuff that I've been working on while waiting for parts and such to do the more exciting parts

Swapped on a bumperpad front bumper. I like the more old school lotus eprit-esque look that it gives the car.

Still waiting on various people for various things. K20 is at the machine shop. Engine mounts are in active production (finally). Westcoastfiero is almost done with my suspension and brakes.

However, some progress has been made, my tires arrived, as did a pile of fun scoops and vents from Paul Angel. I started with the one that will provide air to the K20, replacing the stock fender intake:

Also got the tires mounted and on the car. Just a tad more contact patch than the 205s that came on the car

As for weight, I tossed them on my bathroom scale. The Enkei RPF1s are very light. I'm not sure what the OEM wheel/tire weight is on an 88 but I'm happy with this:
Garbage 16s + 205 all seasons: 42lbs
Front 17x9 RPF1 with 255/40r17: 41lbs
Rear 18x9.5 RPF1 with 275/35r18: 45lbs

Here you go. 18" wheel with 275/35 on the left, 17" wheel with 255/40 on the right. To my eye the left looks like it has a far larger sidewall even though that isn't true.

Aesthetically I'm also pretty happy, and this package does indeed clear the suspension, though the car definitely needs some flares. That's fine though, I wanted an excuse to do that anyways. With my black paint trick the rears look incredibly meaty.

I have 18x9.5 C5 Corvette Conestogas with 1" adapters. The 61mm offset with 25mm adapter comes out to 36mm.
In the 35-40 range should work.

Got the first of my presents from WCF this week. Still waiting on the brakes and front shocks but this is enough to be able to get started on the rear. That's good, I was getting tired of fiberglass work...

In other news I'm just about done the process of grafting on the fastback clip to my notchback bodywork. Why? Because while I've always preferred the fastback sails, I like the notchback taillight section better and I had nothing better to do while waiting for parts

this will be a pretty unique looking car when you're done. Bumperpad fastback with notchie tails... got any other pictures?

Thanks! I've always loved the 70s wedge cars like the Pantera, Esprit, and M1 so I've been putting together the Fiero pieces that most evoke those for me.

I'm not anywhere close to finished with the body (it'll eventually be all gloss black for one thing) so I haven't had it out for any glamor pictures. Here's a couple more quick shots of the current dusty state though.

Looks like you're in the basement of a big condo/apartment building.

The neighbors haven't given you any trouble for working on a car there?

Not that big a building, only 4 floors of apartments. Thankfully everyone is very chill with me working on the car down there and I do my best to keep it clean and wash the spot out whenever I've made a mess. The spot next to me with the motorcycles is also mine so I have plenty of room to spread out tools and such (as is the one the subaru in the background is in...plus one more down a level for my partner's car :-D). The only ask I've had was from the couple with the new volvo next to me, that I put a blanket over their car if I'm sanding on that side to keep the dust off :)

Funny, the garage space was going to be my next question! lol! your neighbors must be pretty chill, I can't imagine that flying around the apartments I've lived.

Couple more body work updates.

Fab'd up a simple panel for the driver's side fender intake. The plan is to have a cone filter sitting in here behind the intake so I don't want it open to the road at the bottom to suck up water:

Aaand, started working on the fender flares. I'm using a set of universal flares, and then with a heat gun working them to fit the shape of the Fiero. These will eventually have black bolts holding them on, not a fan of the exposed silver fasteners (or the duct tape lol):

Flares look great! Have you thought about replicating the style of the PPG Fiero GTP rear? They had a variant of the fastback style clip that used notchback taillights, among a few other differences from the GT.

Thanks! I'll take some better pics of the finished product once I'm done, they're all molded and finally attached, but I need to trim the inside of the wheel arch still, and fill in the small gaps around the fender intakes.

I've definitely thought about it, the PPG cars look awesome. I plan to run a big rear wing though with a similar mount to what you made, and within 'Max' category of SCCA Time Trials, that all needs to stay within 6" of the rear bodywork (more room to work with the sloped notchy trunk lid), and you can only have one of a spoiler and wing, not both - I'm pretty sure a PPG style rear end would be considered an added spoiler.

Image

I also thought about just filling in the ends of the fastback clip so that it would end up more like an M1 rear end:
Image

But I ultimately decided against that too because I don't think it'll make enough of a visual difference to make it worth the extra bodywork and/or aero penalty if I were to just make an end cap and not fill it in the full length.

Considering it but ideally want to get a couple track sessions in with the floor as is to see if I really care (I may also end up putting a light carpet in so the car complies with gridlife street mod rules as well) - when are you planning on doing your production run?

I'm not in a hurry. Maybe at the end of the year, or when I get enough interest.
