Aaron's 1998 750iL

Post by Aaron »

I'm in Vegas with my girlfriend visiting her folks who live in a condo near the strip. In the top of the parking garage is a BMW 850, flat tires, covered in dust, been sitting for years. So I sent an email out to the complex asking to buy it, and a few hours later a lady calls me and says she knows nothing about it, but has another BMW I might be interested in. Go down to the basement of the garage, and she uncovers this! Her husband bought it in Germany brand new, drove it around, shipped it to the US, then drove it around for 333,000 original miles. He passed away 6 years ago, and it hasn't moved since. She let me buy it, so I changed the battery and the oil, aired up the tires, and drove it back to Colorado! I've been fixing things and road tripping it, it's a beautiful car that just cruises the miles away. And for a strong running 5.4L V12, it still gets 23mpg on the highway. I freaking love this car haha.

You pick up a ranch in CO for all these rides?

I used to want to swap a V12 into a 5 series, since they bolt right in. I never understood why the Germans didn't start a trend of 12 cylinder midsize cars, as BMW, Benz and Audi all had the capability to just drop their 12 cyl engines into the mid-size bodies.

Looks like it's in great shape and clean, especially for the mileage! I hope you've put new tires on it since then though! :-D

Seriously man, I've got cars stashed all over CO.

I've truly come to love this V12. It's unlike any other engine I've had, even after 336k now, it's still the smoothest ICE car I've been in. I frequently catch myself freaking out at stop lights because it doesn't feel like it's running at all. When you start it, it sounds like starting a rocket engine, the starter doesn't pulse like every other car from the compression strokes, it just sounds like an electric motor turning at a constant speed/restriction.

I'd absolutely love to pull it out and rebuild it, but finding parts is a nightmare.

There's not much available in terms of performance, complicated by the dual ECU setup and the use of a dizzy as opposed to coil on plug. I have however fantasized about modifying two M50 cylinder heads to fit, converting it to DOHC 4v. But that's more than likely a fantasy since it'd require heavy fab on one head.
