Of course. Thats what happens when you pump out a tank and the vent isn't open. They were just showing that for a demonstration though.

A little bit of pressure difference over a large surface area still results in a mighty fuckton of force!

At least it's not like the stories I heard from an old man that lived in a mining town, about an entire train car of ammonium nitrate going off and leveling the town. That must have been a sight to behold.

That same phenomenon caused a minor casualty with a SpaceX rocket before their first launch attempt... They had a valve stick when they were dumping propellant and exposed the tank to more negative pressure than they'd built it for before someone caught it.

What do you mean "going off"? It's not nitroglycerin. Unless someone "accidentally" filled it with diesel and "accidentally" dropped in a blasting cap...

He probably is talking about something like this: The worst industrial accident in American history was from ammonium nitrate and no mixed in fuel:

Somebody set up us the bomb. Yeah ammonium nitrate can violently decompose on its own. Though even mixed up as ANFO, a blasting cap isn't enough - I think you need to use a blasting cap set in a booster charge that then sets off the ANFO to do the job. Is the NSA listening in yet?

what do you think they were running the engines on that boat off of? Rainbows and dreams? I'm willing to bet there were quite a few fuel leaks after the ammo caught on fire...

Yes it was mixed with fuel. It was already in an explosive mixture.
It was manufactured in a patented explosives process, mixed with clay, petrolatum, rosin and paraffin to avoid moisture caking. It was also packaged in paper sacks, then transported and stored at temperatures that increased its chemical activity. Longshoremen reported the bags were warm to the touch.
All you need is a blasting cap and kaboom.

Ammonium Nitrate its self does not burn or explode. I used to make it when I was an operator at a fertilizer plant. It's strictly an oxidizer.

It's a fertilizer that is formed in a prilling tower. Almost perfectly round balls, blasting grade is much smaller than AG grade, the more surface area the better for blasting, but both will do the same job.

The plant I used to work in shut down production of AG grade after 911. They only make blasting grade now....
