Fine bitches, I'll race my car (15.411 @ 90.01)

Post by Aaron »

Peer pressure has got to me. The supercharged Corolla I posted the race story about ran at the track down here, so now I have to go. He made up more excuses as to how shitty his car was running when I beat him, so we will see. He pulled a 15.1 @ 90 with a 2.2 60' last Friday. For comparison, my Z34's best time was like a 15.1 at 93 2.3 60'(With 265 hp). So that Corolla making 240 is no joke. He is putting on slicks, and claims to have fixed a few things, and his hoping for mid 14s. I'm hoping for low 15s.

We are going down next Friday (~2 weeks), by then I'll have the new injectors, IAC, TPS, and CTS, so hopefully it'll be running a bit better, and idling. My friend with the stock SRT4 (3" catback is all) might also tag along, and he'll have a camera. According to everyone I know, most stock SRT4s run flat 15s here.

So you're telling me this guy imported some fancy jap motor. Put a blower on it, and god knows what else. To run a 15?? And you rag on the 4.9ers? Least they only spend a little bit of coin.......and with 265hp you can only muster a 15.1? I assume its in the lumina? Still doesnt sound right. Ive seen stock z24's run mid 14's.

This is all at 6000-6500 feet altitude, about a 20% power loss. My Lumina that ran a 15.1 pulled my Dad's 13.9 second Z28 by about a car length.

Pretty much. Not bad, but not nearly as good as a Fiero.

What difference does altitude make with a boosted motor? And why don't you have pictures of this car yet? And why do I care?

The impeller on the supercharger always spins at the same speed in relation to engine RPM.. but the air is thinner, so performance is reduced.

If it was turbocharged it would just spool up further until the wastegate opened at the same PSI it did at a lower altitude, so performance would be pretty much the same.

With altitude, you'll eventually run a turbocharged car off the top of the compressor map because you'll be running a HUGE pressure ratio. It doesn't take much drop in ambient pressure to send the pressure ratio through the roof. 30 psi absolute in the manifold goes from 2:1 pressure ratio to 3:1 pressure ratio with ambient dropping from 15 psi to 10.

I already posted the explanation in another thread, and I'm sure you saw it there. Turbocharged cars lose about 10-11% at 6-7k altitude, supercharged and N/A cars both lose about 20-22%.

As for why you care, you probably don't. Becuase you're just like NLers that don't need to prove themselves. Except you paid out the ass for a few dyno runs. But until you get your ass to a 1320, my car will be faster after this Friday.

As promised, I did run my car. The track was in Pueblo, about an hour drive each way. As luck would have it, halfway down, my alternator dies and my volt light comes on. Mother Fucker. I made it to the track, passed tech, and got one run in before the car totally died.It was BAD. Power was just gone, it would sputter hard north of 5000 rpm, and wouldn't rev past 6k. It sucked. So I made it back, got my slip, and parked. Luckily a semi pro racer there (10.05 on a GTO), charged my battery, and I made the hour trip home all on battery (Car died as I pulled it into the garage).

Here's the slip. It sucks, about a 15.2 at sea level. Oh well though, going to fix this and take it down next weekend. Holy good reaction time though.

R/T..............012
60................2.528
330..............6.899
1/8..............10.589
MPH.............65.57
1000............ERROR (1000' timer was busted on my lane)
1/4..............16.465
MPH.............85.17

Right 1st 2.9036 (I was Right lane, so I did win vs a 4200 Trailblazer 18.7)

16.465 @ 85.17. Wack slow. But I'll fix it and run next weekend. Still faster than Steven, Jeff, p8ntman, Shaun, and most the others on this board :la:

I too bet your Northstar would have. But it didn't :la:

My 60' is awful, which is odd, I actually thought I got off the line pretty well. No tire spin and I kept the RPMs up.

Funny story actually. The kid with the Corolla didn't even show. A friend of his was there and said they ran into a problem with the car, the hood scoop that was tack welded on and directed air to his intercooler blew off and they had to fix it

God I love Fieros.

Old alternator out, new alternator in and hooked up. All related terminals coated with anti-corrosion. Total time, 20 minutes. It was amazing, SOOOO much easier than the W-body cars. This fixe dmy problem, car starts and charges perfectly, and runs great. Next weekend I'm going to go back, hopefully with better luck.

Wow, my 4.5 would be all over you with those kind of times. Must be that bigass Holley TBI sitting on there. I will be glad when you get your crap together so you stop being an embarassment to the community.
