Real Fiero Tech

This post comes from thoughts I had after posting to this thread.

Let's hear an Aye if you've actually driven your Fiero in some sort of sanctioned performance driving in the past year. This includes anything in which you are required to wear a helmet - autocross, rally, road racing, or track days. I suppose you can even post if you've drag raced even though helmets aren't required for the speeds that most cars here would run.

So let's hear it. Post what you've done in the past year. If it's drag racing then post if you were just running for times to see what your car could do, or if you were actually involved in competition.

I'll start.

I autocrossed my Fiero twice in the past year.

I have, but nothing sanctioned where a helmet or cones are involved. Mostly just the street with nuns and boxes of kittens everywhere. I was supposed to hit the track today, but I think the fuel pump is going out so I didn't go.

3 autocrosses and a drag day

3 or 4 years ago I was at the drag strip ever weekend and at the road corse every month. Seems like I've been doing less and less every year, including driving the car. I didnt evern go to one show last year and only put about 500 miles on the car.

Within the past year?
No. But I have in the not too distant past.

I did run at Waterford at the 20th.
Has to be the most fun I've ever had with my clothes on. No question.

I've run at Dallas dragway (20 minutes from my front door, but only a 1/8 mile track.)

I've done the last two dyno days that Jeremy sponsored at the Huntsville swap meet. (Not so stellar... but it told me that I needed to fix stuff.)

This past summer, I reworked my 3.4 and swapped in the 5 speed.
As I was in the process of doing that, the guy who was doing my heads (Goza performance) told me that they had closed Dallas dragway.
Shit.

One of the guys in our club said that SCCA is putting together a program where people can run street cars during "quiet time" (2.5 hours on Sunday morning) at Road Atlanta. It requires an initial "instructor ride along" to make sure you know the line and won't do anything stupid. Once they figure that you're not a menace to yourself or others they'll turn you loose.
You will only have to be "signed off" once. After that you can come back whenever you want.
Passing will be allowed on the front and back straights, but not in the turns (typical track day stuff.) I don't remember how the sessions will be broken down, however
I think it's going to cost $100 or so, but don't quote me.
THAT, I'm looking forward to.

I'm one of the old guys with a 4p9 in a "pretty" car. I have lots of fun with it, and I still like to watch the jaws drop when I show up at local shows with it.
Even though the 3.4 is probably faster and is more fun to drive.

When the Northstar car was running I dragged and AutoXed it.
In general I try to leave some rubber on the road every time I leave town.
I love the way my Formula handles and will be working on it a lot more as time/funds allow.
My Pontiac 6000 AWD handles better than most Fieros.

I made it to the drag stip a couple of times last year. But they were not club-sanctioned events.

I do plan on going to one club-sanctioned drag racing event this year but it won't be for Fieros. It will be for Buicks. I can enter/participate because my Fiero is buick-powered.

Went to about 8 or 9 autocross events this season.

I'm hoping to make just as many this coming year and also go to at least two track days at Gingerman. My biggest limit as far as events go, is $. I'm in my last year of grad school, so I don't really have lots of $ for racing entry fees/tires/brakes/etc. Of course when I get a real job, I may just buy an Elise to play with, instead of the Fiero.

I had time reserved at Gingerman raceway - but a Porsche club knocked me off the schedule.

nope.
it was my first 4.10 trans. didnt know there was a V6 version......
was my first time at the dragstrip, after swapping from the old TH125

did a 2800 clutch dump, heard a little chirp - and a bang. when I went to push in the clutch - the pedal was a brick. grabbed the shifter - and it was wobbly. motor just rev'ed. shut it down. got out - saw a ugly puddle at the line. popped the trunk, and could see my gears all shiney.....
got to push my car all the way down the 1/4 to the lane out....yay
and, then call around to find someone to tow me back home. 1-1/2 hour drive to the strip. luckily - a buddy was able to rent a car dolly & get me home.

not last year due to the car not being road worthy - but the years prior i did - and this year it will be at Maryland International Raceway, and Summit Point or VIR
