Valve Spring dampener broken
how critical are these things to not be broken? I pulled the valve covers off the motor today and I noticed that the dampeners under the springs were broken on 2 valves.
I dont' remember off hand if it were the exh or intake valves.
Just how critical are these things to be intact? Can I just pull the spring, take out the dampener and reinstall the spring sans dampener?
What causes these to break? I am guessing over reving.
They are crane springs

Pics will haev to wait till tomorrow as I didn't take any. I figured it would be hard to see the broken dampener through the spring if a pic was taken which is why I didn't take any tonight.
No no overrevving. Maybe 10k miles on the springs and dampeners.
The dampener is what sits inside the spring This is the best pic I could find on a quick search
Here is a large pic. Not sure if it will work might need to copy and paste.

I'm not sure on how harmful this is, but I could see some potential bad things if they keep breaking down. Pieces of broken metal are never good in an engine. I could see them possibly getting caught in a valvespring and creating some unwanted bind, or possbily clogging oil passeges depending on how much breaks off.
But that is all theory. If it's apart, might as well replace it.

I thought that was there to prevent the coils from slipping past each other when over compressed. I'm not sure why you would want a dampener on a valve spring, that would only hurt performance. I would deffinatly replace with new springs and "dampeners, and give the manufacturer a call, they would really be able to tell you, but I would not leave a broken one in the car for sure.

How do you become more resonant? Do you mean the resonant F would be much lower to where typical RPM creates resonance? Are they dampers, or are they a second set of springs that adjust the resonant frequency by acting in parallel? The Dark Side of Will wrote:The dampers are exactly that... dampers. They introduce friction into the valvespring to kill valvetrain resonance. If you remove them, you'll float the valves more easily because your valvesprings will be more resonant.
