I feel I must chip in my 2 cents worth, as I am a professional automotive machinist. I made these notes as I read the post: could be head gasket, if so, pull head and have it magnafluxed and resurfaced, but first check your casting numbers on your heads. If the last 3 digits are 882, you're probably...

Munchy trans
I saw slow-n-steady's munchy, and wondered what my 42,000 mile '84 4-speed would bring? I won't sell it until I get Jinxmutt's Getrag running, but my box has the 3.53/1.9545454/1.24/0.81 gearset with the 4.10:1 final. My Fiero came with all service records, so I know the mileage is correct.

I'm not saying high compression accumulates either more or faster or both. I am saying it's more critical that it doesn't. Carbon deposits, platinum plugs, overheated exhaust valves, and sharp edges all can cause detonation. The higher your dynamic cylinder pressure climbs, before the burn begins, t...

no, a 205 on a 9 is too much is still too much, but I guess we will have to agree to disagree on this one. If I had an 88-96 vette, and could put 17x10s on it, all around, then go 275/40, all around, I would. A 275 on an 11? I've seen it, I've ridden in it. Snap oversteer. Scary. These are my feelin...

I wouldn't build an engine for premium, for a couple of reasons. One, you have to keep the chambers carbon-deposit-free, and 2, you hafta change something to get your compression back down if you decide to add boost. Around here, we have 85 to 91 octane, we're at 4300 feet, and for a 350 chev, iron ...

I wouldn't want the CD changer, tho I imagine I could drive it home with no second gear. And even if second gear is bad, unless the case is cracked, I end up with a taller first and a stronger case. I think it'd be cheaper for me to ride the bus there, than drive my truck and use a tow dolly. Best o...

Tires, not tread. Real racecars use the widest wheel, rim way wider than tread, for maximum sidewall support. Look at the mid 80s vettes. they had 255/50-16s all around, with 8.5 inch front rim and 9.5 inch rear rim. The challenge series cars put the 9.5 all around. No, the narrow rim is for ride qu...

So, Aaron sent me an Excel spreadsheet on 3 turbos on this engine, and I gotta agree, the GT35R seems best. I found that the T66 would be a better choice only between 2000 and 3000 rpm and that at 1.8 bar. The T4E60 would be better at 2000-3000 at any bar, but would be inadequate above 4500. For tho...

The 86 v6 4-speed is supposed to have a strength advantage over my 84 4-speed, right? and a 3.31:1 first versus my 3.53:1, right? I want it all, really. The getrag is said to be strong, and I have a feeling that within 2 years, I'll have managed to break a munchy and a getrag. I've got a lead from J...
