If you are referring to linux, there is old skool thought that your / (root) and /home (user) filesystems should be on different partitions. Most distros will default to setup your drive in this manner as this was originally intended to prevent a user from running your server out of diskspace (a ver...

Fortunately / Unfortunately, I have had the same email address for over 10 years now and I get 532 average spam emails a day. This number used to be a lot higer until I firewalled off the entire SouthEast Asia area. I had to restort to a challenge/response filter to avoid the clutter, which after it...

As I mentioned, I would test the at the connector to the board with the laptop on (under load). Finding a ground should be easy and regardless of the pinout you should see only +-12V, +-5V, +-3V on the wires. If you see anything else like +-10.4V, then I would surmise it is a power supply issue some...

well I'll tackle the three main distros one at a time. FreeBsd is very stable, in fact I belive thats what the yahoo servers are running. OpenBsd it the most secure *nix platform. and NetBsd has installs for just about any platform you want to run it on. Also because less people are using BSD you w...

The BIOS is just a program that the CPU runs upon boot ( initializes the motherboard components, manages settings, sets up power saving, communicates with the boot device hardware, etc) . Ive seen many BIOS batteries dead on board, but not with the symptoms you describe. Usually you will notice sett...

Heh. All the mirrors just have the CD install files. One directory contains just the ISO images for the CDs, the other has the contents of the CD. The ALL.img file is in the install folder and the link I gave points to the install folder on what would be the CD. To do a FTP or HTTP install you would...

ISO images are only bootable on CD media. Installing via USB isnt a very obvious way of doing it, so it isnt documented all that well unfortunately. CD installs are probably about 98% of the way most get linux, anything else is odd. I am one of the 2% that does it differently just because I know how...

Let me get this straight. If a person gets banned their ratings disappear from your bar. Does that mean if someone who neg'd (and banned) someone else, then gets banned themselves, does that person become unbanned with only a diff of 49 then? ;) it would happen - but its setup so you can't rate som...

Well, I must say it cleared up my theory that I had about the Flight 93 being shot down. I saw evidence of two crash sites from a MSNBC helicopter camera and they did say at the time the two sites were about 8 miles apart (according to the reporters). With the evidence I had, I couldnt believe an en...
