the area of a circle is 3.14 * dia. so, when the dia goes up, the area goes up alot more. small increases in diamater make a BIG jump in volume/capacity. now, the next thing, sidewall drag. this is why 1 large pipe is better than 2 smaller pipes of equal volume. It makes sense that the relationship...

Re: Is this correct? -- Volumetric flow vs. pipe Diameter

So...if pipe diameter goes from 1" to .75", volumetric flow goes to 32% of what it could flow previously? Now think about that... does that REALLY make sense? That may be true for something really, really viscous like molasses or something... but for things like air... I think it goes by ...

I know -- it is a little counter-intuitive. That's why I posted it up here. I was thinking more along the lines of oiling and the possible benefits of maybe boring the oil passages that lead to the mains, maybe *barely* increasing the size of the passages to the mains. I also think it would make me ...

Is this correct? -- Volumetric flow vs. pipe Diameter

I wrote an email to my dad telling him some of the stuff we've been going over in my thermal/fluid mechanics class, and some of the calculations I did were blowing my mind. Someone check me -- I would ask my professor but he isn't very personable (yeah, thats a nice way to put it). Okay -- I know th...

I know there's a lack of math, and the drawings weren't terribly helpful. The patent makes some sense to me, though. Haha yeah -- the talk about the power to weight ratios they "are going to achieve" kind of tickled me as well. I wonder how much hp they plan on making. Even if their motor ...

MYT engine

Anyone heard of this? http://www.angellabsllc.com/index.html I don't have a whole lot of time to look over it because I've got an 8am test, but it seems interesting. I don't think they have done any actual testing where they ignite a fuel/air mixture, but they have done what they call "air moto...

Wouldn't you want a LONGER rod for better low end power? (more dwell, more leverage) A shorter rod will accelerate the piston away from TDC faster, helping the air get moving at low RPM when it doesn't have much momentum built up. I think matching the cam profile to the rod/stroke ratio is more imp...

Wacky, but bear with me....gasoline to diesel

Would this work? Idea: Find an aluminum V8, like maybe the Ford DOHC (might not work, just an example). Make sure you start with a decently strong block, then beef it up more by adding a main girdle and filling the block if it needs it. Add a stroked crank -- it would raise the compression enough fo...

How about for the '88 suspension? You mentioned something awhile ago about raising the rear roll center by raising where the control arms pivot from the cradle. How about the front?

The reroute your fuel lines. Nothin' says loving like custom bent hard lines. Braided stainless may have bling, but real thought and effort goes into bending custom hard lines. mmmmm not only do they look more professional, but they're cheaper and weigh less :afrocool: You have to be careful of vib...

You really should get Race Car Vehicle Dynamics by Milliken & Milliken. If you're an SAE member you can buy it from their online bookstore and get a discount. I've actually seen that book floating around the FSAE shop, and I really wanted it. I'll have to try ot pick up a copy. I need to try to...

Oh, also -- How rough of a ride would Heim joints give me if I wasn't running a small sidewall tire? Our FSAE team makes suspension components by cutting tubing to the right length, then machining threaded inserts on a lathe and welding them onto the end and using heim joints. I guess notching the t...

suspension geometry -- macpherson vs. double A-arms

What are the advantages and disadvantages of each? I've got this GTI that I bought for $300 and drove for about a year and a half, so I'm not afraid to cut into it. I want to experiment with some things, and I'm going to have to change the suspension around anyway (AWD project planned), so I'm tryin...

Fuel/Air separation

I saw an article in a diesel mag about something that has a fuel/air separator. I think one stage of it is also fuel/water separation, because diesel fuel supposedly has a good bit of water in it. I wonder how much something like this would benefit a gasoline engine? "An 8% increase in mileage,...

How about the bypass filtration system? Did you decide to abandon the idea or are you still looking into things like the size of the DI particles and stuff? Have you considered a dry-sump? A pump can be had on ebay for two to three hundered dollars, and I'm sure you have the means to make a pump and...
