Re: Shock Valving, Spring Rates

The housings I have are in pretty rough shape. The "taco" clamp has a lot of rust. It's is a multilayered stamped steel component that is welded to the Bilstein strut tube. Lots of crevices for water to get in and not get out. The mount is actually bulging where rust has expanded between t...

That's a neat way to convert a shock to a strut. I do wonder if Viking actually installed a sufficiently strong shaft and upgraded rod guide bearings to take the lateral loads. How thick is the rod?

Just need to decide on valving now. These struts will get 500 lb/in springs.

Has anyone experimented with atypically-low rear compression damping to reduce turn-in oversteer on a Fiero?

Re: Shock Valving, Spring Rates

Maybe a Presta valve (for road bicycle tire) would fit better than Schrader within the confines of the mounting stud thread. I have not seen Presta valves rated to the required 500 psi and 200-300*F that the nitrogen chamber valve experiences. The Penske IU-22S valves happen to be a perfect fit and...

Re: Shock Valving, Spring Rates

Disassembled one of the Fiero Bilstein rear struts today. I bought two of these from someone on Old Europe many years ago. They are no longer available new. As a reminder this diagram shows what the entire assembly looks like. I have already removed the strut housing and the bump stop so they won't ...

Re: Shock Valving, Spring Rates

Gun drilling Fiero Bilstein strut top stud to add a schrader valve. Turns it into a take apart shock that takes any 36mm Bilstein valving. There's juuuust enough room to install the schrader valve body and still fit the nut over it. 20221028_170739.jpg ~3" deep 1/8" dia hole. Wanted to do ...

Re: '88 wheel bearing and hub upgrades

My build is currently running c6 front calipers front and rear via adapters. What is the center to center bolt pattern if the c7 brakes if you don't mind... 128 mm hole spacing on the calipers. If the calipers from the C6 bolt on you might be able to find a rotor with the correct height and diamete...

Re: '88 wheel bearing and hub upgrades

Stock height...ish. They are designed to have the stock geometry, but you'll need a different/modified lower control arm for the larger lower ball joint, so you could set the height of the lower control arm where you want it. Material will be 6061-T6 or 7075-T6, need to do some more simulation still...

Progress on uprights

Progress. Hub/Bearing options: - C7 Corvette (5x4.75), compatible with any Corvette wheels, but limited by brake caliper clearance so pre-C7 wheels may not fit. - 6th gen Camaro (5x120), compatible with Camaro, C8 Corvette, and BMW wheels. Very wide selection of wheels available in sizes from 17 up....

Re: Tech Link Library

Here's another great site for brake system calculations: https://brakepower.com/ Make sure to read all of the references, they're very informative. There is a common misconception that stepped bore tandem master cylinders have different front and rear output pressures and can be used to adjust bias ...

Re: Wiring Harness Best Practices

Anything in the engine bay needs to be rated to 125C. Full stop. Anything in the interior needs to be rated to 85C. Assuming you are talking about wire insulation rating... With appropriately sized conductors, that will generally be sufficient. To calculate the required insulation rating you need t...

Re: Anyone have a 3.4 DOHC V6 sitting around not in a car?

If you do have the crossover pipe and manifolds that's probably enough parts to get close. With everything bolted together get the manifolds parallel and turned to put the flanges at 60* to each other and it ought to work.
