Re: 87 Fastback L47 Chump Car/ Lemons Project.
Front Suspension removed. We Ruined the Driver side lower control arm mount in our attemp to seperate the bushing sleeve from the bolt. The bolt holes are very elliptical now. http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b361/FieroWannaBe/ChumpCar/IMAG0213.jpg Im thinking some fender washers could be welding o...

Re: 87 Fastback L47 Chump Car/ Lemons Project.
The GR8Grip unit puts spring preload on the spider and side gears, coorect? Does it do anything to mitigate thrust and friction load? I emailed EP about sending a Muncie Diff in since I know have 3 complete units. The price was 599$, more than I want to spend on this car. I'll probably blow a ton of...

Re: Autocrossing the DOHC 88 Fiero
Ugh... took my front suspension apart to swap the springs and found my front left Koni Red shock covered in oil. I actuated it by hand and it still provides similar damping to the right side, but it ain't gonna last long. I don't remember when I installed the Konis, but I think it was less than 10,...

Re: 87 Fastback L47 Chump Car/ Lemons Project.
Moved the car indoors. http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b361/FieroWannaBe/ChumpCar/th_IMAG0196.jpg found this. Replacement rack from an 85GT is 75$ at a local yard. Maybe a local junk fiero collector has one for cheaper. I pretty sure almost everything on this car will be replaced, yikes. I got new...

Re: Spherical bearing upper strut mounts
Those bearings seem to be rated strong enough to work. But there primary design is for Radial load handling. A strut will see higher axial loads at the upper attatchment and more often than it sees radially from cornering forces. I would want to use a bearing designed for axial loads directly. The s...

Re: Spherical bearing upper strut mounts
Looking at the CAD of the mcmaster units, they cannot physically be mounted back to back the center of the arcs lay .160" apart. Yeah. The CAD doesn't say what the radius is, but they would need a spacer in between to make them an actual spherical bearing. This spacer *could* be a stiff spring...

Re: Spherical bearing upper strut mounts
Preload at full droop isn't relevant. The upper spring seat will be retained on the strut shaft by the top nut. The spring will push against the lower face of the spring seat, while the upper face of the spring seat will mount the convex side of that spherical bearing. The concave side would be mou...

Re: Spherical bearing upper strut mounts
At minimum rating I would consider this, simply using a 4g load of total vehicle weight as a very unsunstantiaded approximation of shock load. http://www.mcmaster.com/#2459K13 I'd be looking at something like that also... BUT, you'd need two of them back-to-back to keep the suspension from coming a...

Re: Spherical bearing upper strut mounts
I was refering to most OE designs.
I do see the merit in a single load point from a service standpoint on the race track.

Re: Spherical bearing upper strut mounts
I dont see the farnorthdesign as more robust than the status qou. I would not like to have the single pillow spherical loaded entirly by damping and some cornering forces with the now added spring force. (it makes it easier to replace the bearings though, as there is no thrust bearing to service now...

Re: Autocrossing the DOHC 88 Fiero
Anti-squat geometry uses forward tractive loads to extend the suspension. That means that rearward tractive loads would try to compress the suspension. I don't see that more anti-squat would increase rear brake effectiveness... I think it would be the other way around. Yes, by attempting to "c...

Re: Autocrossing the DOHC 88 Fiero
Koni's Reds are only rebound adjustable correct? Perhaps lowering the rebound rate will help keep you inner tire in contact with the tarmac in transisions, reducing turn-in oversteer if that is an issue. A little more anti-squat may help on turn-exit oversteer as well, and might help make the rear b...

Re: Autocrossing the DOHC 88 Fiero
This thread is specifically about my impressions with autocross use. Most people don't build cars for both autocross and road courses, because they require different handling characteristics and gearing (not to mention the rules). I think it's useful to share my setup and driving impressions for th...

Re: Autocrossing the DOHC 88 Fiero
I think if you took the car to a road course track day or an autocross set-up for more for pro-touring cars, you might feel a little different about the ratios; The 2-3 shift would become more imperative for the corner-exit points. You may even feel different about the camber change characteristics ...

Re: Shock Valving, Spring Rates
There was a video on youtube of the suspension of a stock 88 during an autocross: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJndkuoU3k8&feature=BFa&list=FLPTvWyDsZejAKc7Drz3NDUw It looks like it had a broken cradle as well. To go along with the Koni motorsport strut mention, penkse has developed a line...

Re: 87 Fastback L47 Chump Car/ Lemons Project.
Updates as of so far: The car isnt dead, just no physical frame progress lately. I found an 84 in a yard that is about fully stripped, I hope it is still there so I can go and cut the lower and upper frame rails out, they were exposed and in minty rust free condiditon. What I did get for the build l...

Re: My new Fiero.
I'm of the mindset that you pay cash for your toys. You don't need them anyways and If you need 20 year financing you really shouldn't have one. I'd be hard pressed to believe a 3.4 camaro would beat a 308 by much, I'd think a QV would even still wipe the floor with most 90s GM cars. Yes, Ferraris ...
