Re: Chump car reliability
No need to be stealthy if you're legitimately cheap. A POS '88 with a manual trans that doesn't run can be had for next to nothing if you keep your eyes peeled, $300 is easy. A junkyard 3100/3400 can be had for $150 or less at a you-pull yard when sales are running and they are fairly common. That's...

Re: The Mule rides again (sort of) - pics.
So are you proposing you plan to get all that work done by October? Deadlines are a wonderful thing, but I think either your level of expectation or your timeline needs to shift, you're way too much of a perfectionist to hit that date based on what I've seen from you in the past. In either ca...

Re: Remote Water Pump - Flow Theory.
'80's GM cars use about 12 different locations for temp sensing, gauge senders, fan switches, etc... What's your point? Also, did you see the link I posted about the Davies Craig water pump control strategy? I figured you would acknowledge it isn't as ghetto as you imagined... Bryce I did take a ga...

Re: Remote Water Pump - Flow Theory.
If you do decide to use electronic control on the pump, be aware that where the sensor is placed will significantly affect how quickly it warms up when the engine starts. Give the thermostat-avoiders some credit Will! Here's the control strategy on the pump (see page 8): http://www.daviescraig.com....

Re: Remote Water Pump - Flow Theory.
For a slightly different perspective, I'm just about to go with a remote electric water pump on one of my projects...a Chevy 4.3 into an old VW Bug. I had an OEM pump on it, but in an effort to reduce the package space and weight for the engine, I'm going remote. I just received this pump and contro...

They have aluminum as well, just as a point of reference. Any local hydraulic hose supplier should have these, no need to ship if you don't want to.

Actual price? What about the sensor bracket...am I missing something, or is it expected that the purchaser would build their own sensor bracket? Is there a core charge and/or reduced price if a damper is supplied?

Re: My Grassroots Motorsports $2009 build
For those who might be interested, I'm building another GRM Challenger. It's not a Fiero, this time around I am aiming to see if I can beat the Honda boys at their own game. Since a lot of my budget went to the N600 shell, I won't be able to build up a bajillion hp turbo engine, but lightness should...

This might save some time for '88 info. See Bloozberry's technical drawings, including '88 knuckles, strut, wheel, etc. in here:

Wow, to think he did all of that the old fashioned way instead of with a laser scanner. Impressive!

Re: The SERIOUS Wheel & Tire Thread
I suppose that's true, but it seems like you're talking a few mm. I suppose when you start getting to 18-20" wheels it might add up to an extra half inch or so, so worth mentioning and measuring if somebody has both to measure and compare.

Re: The SERIOUS Wheel & Tire Thread
Is it fair to say 88 rear fitment is the same as 84-87 rear fitment? They came with the same wheel size/width/offset, same hubs, same axles, etc. so they must have extremely similar wheel fitment. A friend of mine has one of these: http://www.wheelworksinc.com/mountmate.html I have two '88s in my po...

Re: Northstar exhaust manifold improvement
I seem to recall mention of certain years having smaller exhaust ports on the heads, but it's possible that I'm getting my 96-99 and my 2000+ mixed up. If you had them both in front of you and didn't notice a difference in port size, I'm guessing they're the same size.

Re: Northstar exhaust manifold improvement
Sure, I'm no schlep when it comes to finding parts cheap...remember, I'm the one who built the hybrid AWD Fiero for under $2k. I see that they're the same bolt pattern, but I was wondering if the port sizes are the same on both manifolds. Being tubular, it'd be a real bummer to get a pair of ...

Re: Northstar exhaust manifold improvement
Are the port inlet sizes on the 96+ manifolds the same size as the pre-96 manifolds? The newer ones definitely look like a superior part, I'll keep my eyes peeled for a set at the junkyard. I assume you TIG'd it, I'd be curious to hear what you used for filler rod and if you'd do it the same way if ...

It's pretty wild to see a GM car from that era in such good shape. Have you posted on http://www.grandamgt.com/forum/ ? Yeah, I told my wife it's in incredible shape...for a '92 Grand Am. She just laughed. I've got a local guy interested, but if it falls through, I'll definitely give that site a sh...

Re: My Grassroots Motorsports $2009 build
For those who like seeing the Fiero in print, pick up the latest issue of Grassroots Motorsports at your nearest bookstore. The December 2010 issue has a writeup on my $2009 Challenge car. At 6 pages plus a few mentions in prior issues, I think this is the most print a Fiero has seen in a long time!...
