I need BOOKS!
Okay, I'm gonna start looking into engine swaps and need some advice on books to read. I dunno whether to go 3.4,3.8 turbo or just go 3.8SC. Any books or advice would help greatly.
There is 3 main cars around here that I'm lookin to AT LEAST keep up with. There is a Supra(not sure if mk4 or not, but DEFINITELY modded) and a 3000GT(was vr4, also DEFINITELY modded), and a turbo or dual turbo'd Porche(something like that, not seen much). These cars are known around here to be the fastest around here, from what I've heard and want to find out if I have a snowball chance in hell to compare or come close to keepin up with these guys. I would like to try and keep my 5 speed. I know it's weak and stupid choice, I plan on building it up.
Anyways, I need advice on motor setup and whatnot, and some books to read cause I don't know much about turbos and superchargers(heard most from muscle cars era). I know basics but nothing past that. I can admit that I am stupid and wanna be school'd...so to speak. Thanks for any help.

A fiero is probably going to be slower than all the cars you listed, even when modded. If you just want a fast car that can beat any of those guys, you might want to reconsider before you end up spending $10k+ and getting nowhere. That said, there is no master book to engine swaps that would really apply here.
My suggestion would be to read the "swap" threads both in Tech and nontech. Many people have taken lots of pictures showing what they've done to put their engine in. With enough pictures, you don't need words.

My fiero is aliiiive!!

getrag L67 vs decently modded stock turbo VR4 = fiero putting nearly a city block on it from a roll. (ok like 3 cars 75-120)
My turbo setup is not scared of any supra. I trounced a stock auto and a stock 6speed 2JZ with my slow ass 12.8 setup. I think they could put a half car on me from a roll... but my m90 setup was turd slow past 30mph.
The epic showdown will happen this spring, my good friend has a single turbo T74SBB setup, he made 783whp with, that will see some dig street racing soon vs my turbo fiero. It will be a traction battle, he will rickroll me from a highway run.
I say turbo 3800 + 5speed could make you pretty respectable from a roll, if you knew what you were doing. If you get a transmission touched by god and knew how to drive, you could run some serious 11's on the street and track.
You cant really build a 5speed... but a friction LSD and a 93+ diff would work nicely for some added strength.
Only reading material I could suggest is my 3800 swap bible. 3800's would be a great starting point for you, because there is no need to spend money to go stupid fast in one if you can make simple parts, aka the stock bottom end and heads can support a good hunk of HP.

A couple of people have cryo-treated 282's. That supposedly helps SIGNIFICANTLY.darkhorizon wrote:You cant really build a 5speed... but a friction LSD and a 93+ diff would work nicely for some added strength.
However, I have NOT seen any well organized descriptions of how much it helps. E.g. "ran 11.5 and blew up two transmissions, ran the cryo one down to 10.8 before it blew up"

VR4's are HEAVY. They're not super-easy to mod. If the guy's actually fast, then he's smart. If he's smart, he won't race you from a dig because his transmission is made out of tissue paper. Race him from a roll and he's a heavy car with huge drivetrain loss... not a tough customer.
Supra... find out if it's a MkIII or MkIV. MkIII's take some brains to mod, MkIV's don't. Either way a Fiero can eat one alive from a dig.
The Porsche could have anything in the world going on in the back... find out about it.
Of course, the best thing you can do is build a car for you to enjoy...

I say either a turbo 3400/3500(aluminum head) or a turbo 3800 series 2 motor.
3400 heads breathe really well and on 10 lbs of boost they can make 300 whp. Definately won't be enough to hang with a modded vr4 nor a modded Supra. Of course turn up the boost to 14-15 lbs and you will do pretty well.
Turbo 3800 would be quick too on 14 lbs. Might make more low end tq then the 3400 though which could be bad for the tranny
If using the getrag you will need to use a heavy duty clutch like a West Coast Fiero stage 5 setup I think it is. Its the ceramic iron clutch. I have the stage 4 kevlar/kevlar and I am probably making around 400 lb ft of tq at the wheels with my turbo 3.4 and the clutch doesn't like it too much. Its slips on occasion depednign what rpm I am at and if I brake boost it. The ceramic iron would probably be the best bet for making more tq then me.
If I were to do it again fresh, I would do a 3500 aluminum head 60 degree swap with a 67mm turbo.
I have run an 450 whp turbo mk4 supra and I had about 3 cars or so on him at 120 mph when I shut down but he said he was slowly creeping in on me. We went from a 55 roll or so which was definately an advantage for him.
