DIY Tuning Questions

Post by Gooch »

Hey guys,
I am working on my large-port 3100 swap (my j/y 3400 was bad) and would like to do my own tuning. I have an ALDL cable and laptop. I had a 7730 setup in my old 2.8 car and would like to re-use it.
What else do I need?
Chip adapter?
Chips?
What do I use to burn the chips?

I have done some research already but would love to ask here and see what you guys have to say.

Thanks

You can flash chips with the APU1 and BURN2. Pick out a chip and adaptor. A ZIF also comes in handy for moving the chip around more than once.

TunerPro RT is free: http://www.tunerpro.net/

Don't forget about the code mask (operating system your ECM will be using).

If you will be using a distributor with your turbo 3100 build using the 7730 ECM, you will need to use the $58 code mask programming (Syclone/Typhoon).

If you are using DIS (recommended, by the way), you can use the $8F code mask programming (89 Grand Prix 3.1 Turbo). The .bin definition files and scan tool def. files TunerPro RT needs to work with these masks are available from various places on the net (free downloads).

There is also Code59, but you will want to read up more on it since it is "3rd party" created: http://www.code59.org/

Good luck!

So using the BURN2 and TunerPro RT, would that be all I need?

For now the car isn't going turbo, but I will be using the DIS. I am using the 3100 heads and intake.
Would the turbo gran prix map be close enough to get the car running? Engine is a large port 3100 170ish hp and 195 tq from a 2000 Lumina (Gen III engine)

As per your question "What do I use to burn the chips?"; yes. As I mentioned before, I recommend you pick up a ZIF. Jinxmutt and I broke one of the feet off my DOHC chip several years ago, prying it up with a flat blade. It's really risky not having one if you plan on moving the chip more than once.
