Thinking about a 3.4 DOHC swap

Post by I_wear_pants »

Ok I have thought about a 3.4 dohc swap for awhile, and more recently have been hearing alot more about them. I think that a 3.4 would be perfect for building a well rounded fiero. So does anyone want to help me out by giving me some information about the swap?

Contact Erik at Pfiffle, he will build you a plug and play harness.

Buy an engine.

Buy a 88 Fiero.

Take the 2.8 out.

Put the 3.4 in.

Plug the 3.4 in.

Start the 3.4.

Try to keep the back end straight :thumbleft:

I did the swap, its really very easy. I did a small build thread, and many others have over on Old Europe. If you decide to do the swap I'd be happy to give any advice.

It was a fun engine, woke the car right up. I almost wish I would have kept it, but I came across a N* for a price I couldn't refuse.

Here is my build on Old Europe. Not really a build, more of a progress report.

I'm working on a complete engine swap guide. It will be done by the time you actually find and purchase a motor and finish freshening up the motor itself.

Sorry, I have biases. I said that becuz the swap is easier, the 3.4 will bolt on the factory mounts, and if you had the money, be honest, you'd choose an 88 car (Besides Indy's and other special ones of course).

actually i like the pre-88' because parts are cheaper - more readily available - there is more aftermarket support - etc

The car I'd be swaping it into is an 87 so I know I have to mod the motor and trans mounts. Also do you need a different flywheel? I know on 3.4 pushrod engines you need an 88 neutrally balanced flywheel...

:withstupid: All I've owned have been 86's. I'm content.

I'd avoid the swap, though, because you'd have aaron giving you "advice" all the time. That would get on my nerve.

yeah use a an 88 flywheel or similar like an 88 berretta etc
as long as its a FWD 60*v6 gm flywheel after 88 it should be fine

I always tell the parts counter guys I need a 91 Cavalier Z24 flywheel. They are all the same but seems to be alot of cavi's in junkyards.

I have an 87' with the 96 3.4 in it, adn I didnt have to change any of the mounts. I think it will bolt right up to any Fiero that had the v6 in it. All I had to do is trim the front mount bracket because it is a tad thick.

On my 87GT (and other pre 88's I'm sure) the motor WILL bolt straight up to the Fiero's 3 mount system - tranny has two, and the L shaped 2.8 bracket will bolt straight onto the 3.4. Matter of fact, I tossed it in on the stocker mounts, and didn't like how it sat, and how loose it was.

I did mod my mounts so I could use thinner, tougher, cheaper Dodge truck mounts. The U shaped front mount on the 88 supposedly bolts to the block on both sides, but the way I see it, the rubber mount would break before the block or L bracket so I don't think its really necessary.

Hold on so the 3.4 tdc will bolt right up to the factory mounts (no fabbing) on all v6 models or just the 88's.

minor grinding? does anyone have any build threads on grinding the brackets, the only ones ive seen have been people using truck brackets?
