XP can only format to 32GB for Fat32
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/docu ... l_tdrn.asp
However, linux can format a Fat32 partition to 8TB and it can be read by XP. Maybe MS should stick some of that 40Billion in cash into hiring a dev to fix that.

Yes, Samba is the opensource equivalent of WIndows File Sharing and is 100% compatitble with Windows now (including AD). Most linux distros will have this included and somewhat preconfigured for use. Personally, if you are just going to use it as a fileserver, I would get one of those cheapy SAN / NAS units from Best Buy.

So it will work. That's good to know. But what is a SAN/NAS?zonyl wrote:Yes, Samba is the opensource equivalent of WIndows File Sharing and is 100% compatitble with Windows now (including AD). I bought one of them. It works pretty good except backup programs don't like writing to it.

Oh, a network hard drive. I would do that but I have a brand new 120GB ATA133 Maxtor drive sitting in my closet that I want to do something with. I havent decided if ill use it in that computer as a file server or if I will use it in my computer as a separate Linux drive. But i have a 250gb (232 formatted) drive and I could probably do a partition of about 30gb for a Linux install and then do dual boot.

Switching over to Mozilla Thunderbird for email...
Anyone else use that?
It import the (50+) Eudora mailboxes just fine but did not import the Eudora email filters, so now my dozens of filters aren't in Mozilla. Is there a way to make it do this?
I have this question at the Mozilla support forums as well.
Also, if there's an email program with Linux AND Windows support that's better than Mozilla, I'd appreciate hearing about it. I chose Mozilla because it works with Windoze AND Linux... so I can theoretically place the mailbox files on the common partition and use the same set of mailboxes regardless of OS and save myself some confustion.

with 1/4 gig of ram, you need a swap partition.
The Dark Side of Will wrote:How much memory does a Linux system need before the swap partition can be omitted? I don't have one in mine, and with half a dozen FireFox windows open and Kopete running, it slowed down almost to the point of locking up. It has 256 MB of RAM.

So if I upgrade, how much memory will I need to avoid needing a swap partition?
Is there an easy way to deal with files on multiple drives in Linux? The only way I can find to get outside the partition I installed the OS on is through the "devices" gizmo on the KDE desktop... but I can't browse there through the open file dialogs on most of the programs.
How do I install video codecs? Half of my porn collection doesn't play right with Kaffeine. Is there a different video player I should look up?
gFTP blows. What's a better FTP program?
In general, am I expected to forget all about files and directories and drives and organizing things my way on a large scale and just work within the folders in the "home" directory?

Why do you want to avoid a swap partition? I'd say a gig should be all you'd need, but I'd still have some swap space.
You can mount devices wherever you want them.
I use sftp. just open a terminal and type sftp. Should be installed. man sftp if you need instructions.
try this: http://labs.divx.com/DivXLinuxCodec
generally i mount everything in the home directory, but i don't see why you would have to if you didn't want to.

Konqueror does this and far far more. Tree, split, preview, blah, blah.. Use the dropdown menus luke. The Dark Side of Will wrote:Mozilla T-bird is a PITA to configure...
Is there a file viewing application for Mandrake that's similar to Windows Explorer in Windoze? IOW, with a tree view of the file system?

THe amount of memory is up to you. You can see what is running and how much by using the "top" command in a terminal window (type 'M').. I am usually fine with 512Mb, but I have >=1gig in all of my machines. The Dark Side of Will wrote:So if I upgrade, how much memory will I need to avoid needing a swap partition?

All of you storage devices should be "mounted" in the /mnt folder. You will see /mnt/windows /mnt/removable /mnt/cdrom etc and can browse there like any other folder.
Go to: http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/ and get the "plf" sources for (non-free non-legal) programs. Once you follow the directions there, just type "urpmi mplayer" followed by "urpmi win32-codecs" at the prompt. Mplayer is better than sliced toast and can play any format file known to man (will even try playing the porn that is DRMed needing a license) Gmplayer is the GUI driven one, for those CLI impaired.
I dont use ftp, I use "scp". When I absolutely need ftp though, I use "ncftp". You can get this gem by typing "urpmi ncftp"
Unless you are installing systemwide programs, everything can fit nicely in your home folder and its many subdirectories. Home is considered your "documents and blah" folder.

I found those options in Konqueror, but it goes back to large icon view when I close it (or maybe when I log out...). Either way I'm Linuxed out for the day... I'll figure more of it out tomorrow.zonyl wrote:Konqueror does this and far far more. Tree, split, preview, blah, blah..
