Find me a deal on a monitor.

Post by stimpy »

OK, it's been a couple of weeks that I've been on withdrawal from my computer due to my monitor going "poof". It's time to get a replacement before I completely lose my freakin mind and take up a life of crime for entertainment. I looked at Costco the other night, so I have a general idea of what I can get, but I really don't know what to look for beyond brand names, which really don't mean shit anyhow.

Help a brutha out.

I'd go eBay no matter what you do, but as for reccomendations, my word isn't worth much in that that category.

You want something good? Get a Dell Ultrasharp of any size. Good price, great picture quality. Support DVI and your standard VGA poop too.

I've got one of the Dell Trinitron monitors... OMFG... 21" 0.23dp Sony for like $300. And it owns ALL. Dunno if they are still available new, but you can find 'em used if you poke around. And these things are indestructible.

Can get 19" LCD for $240ish + shipping. Get a DVI (digital video interface) so you can upgrade your video card in the future. Analog is dead.

Let it be known that cheap LCDs look TERRIBLE even with DVI. We have no less than 6 LCD screens at home (we run dual monitor setups, my dad runs 3 sometimes, plus we have extra systems) and I've tried each screen side by side on my system. The cheap ones look like absolute garbage compared to the $500+ ones. The problems are the text is unclear, the colors are faded, non-native resolution support is shoddy, etc.

Here's a question. Instead of buying a $200-300 monitor, plus a new CPU soon enough as the whole thing is going obsolete (circa 2000), can I get a laptop and access the drives in my VAIO desktop through that? So basically the monitor of the laptop could function as the monitor for the desktop too for the rare times when needed? I'd really rather have the freedom of a wireless laptop, so I hope this can work.

yes, you could network the old pC then map drives to it or you could use remote desktop (if it's win2k or Xp) to use the old pc. You wouldn't be able to play games on the old PC via remote desktop. by you could surf the web, use other apps on it

Yeah, but I want to get away from being tied down to one room for my computer usage. It's not the best thing for relationships to be in seperate rooms, and with laptops we can both do our thang and be together at the same time. Plus I have OBDII in my car, so someday I could get the tuning software and cable.

Shit, I can prolly get an eMachine for $5 and a bag of crushed aluminum cans.
