I have heard of cams snapping but its very very rare.
As for the cause of that one I have no Fing clue.
Got torqued wrong or hell maybe a bad casting fromt he factory. might have had some microscopic cracks from the factory and over time they got a bit bigger till you step on it one day and one part of the cam wants to turn and the other part doesn't. Then snappo.
Lack of oil too maybe?

Eh, that's just displacement on demand.
That happened in my parent's '86 Dodge Caravan. The amazing thing was that it actually ran on one cylinder for almost a minute. For being such a crappy engine, it really didn't want to die.
