Carbon Fiber Sunroof Replacement

Post by Unsafe At Any Speed »

Is anybody willing to make or know of a place to find a carbon fiber replacement for the Fiero sunroof? I prefer the look of a solid roof but would like to still be able to remove it if desired. Otherwise, I will probably further de-option my car and swap out the roof.

I might be able to sell you some fiber and supplies. Mike just bought a roll. I can get a price if you want to make it yourself.

I told JM if I made one for myself, I'd make him one too. I haven't had the time. At some point, I'm going to make some more stuff besides the decklids. I don't think that's going to happen for a couple years though.

If you make a sunroof replacement, mark me down. I hate sunroofs.

I might be interested in going that route. Although, honestly I have no idea as how to begin. I don't even know how to glass. I was planning on learning this summer, but it's going quick though.

Why would you want to replace the glass? It weighs like, 5 pounds at the most.

Because it weighs five pounds, and its five pounds at the highest point of the vehicle. Here's an example: The new BMW M6 has a carbon fibre roof panel. It only saved nine pounds overall, but those nine less pounds lowered the center of gravity by a full inch. That's alot.

Fieros are overweight and overbuilt. The glass sunroof is nothing.

You can lose more weight in better places. The sunroof is a waste of time to fuck around with. If it bothers you swap in a hardtop.

Has anybody actually weighed it, because I don't believe that for a second; it feels much heavier than that.

It's about 14 pounds. I do plan on eventually swap on a hardtop, but that's pretty far down the list right now.

Why not just drive without the sunroof in? Surely having a carbon fibre sunroof is going to help tons in the rain...

Honestly, the main reason I want a carbon fiber replacement is cosmetic. I prefer the look of a hardtop but would still like to be able to take out the panel if I want. Of course, the panel would be painted body color on the outside.
I'll probably just end up swaping out roofs I guess. I mean, the roof and the mirrors are the only things that were going to be stock anyway.

I'd paint the outside because it would look tacky and otherwise out of place. The inside I would probably leave without paint though.

Ya, putting it that way... A carbon fiber sunroof would be real nice.
I'd shell out a few benjs for one of those.

But going for strictly weight reduction id get rid of the sunroof.
