Non-Fiero Technical Discussion?

Post by Falcon4 »

We have a Non-Technical Fiero Discussion... but a non-Fiero technical discussion forum, perhaps? :thumbleft:

I need to poke peoples' brains about wiring diagrams and part information for some ancient Dodge parts. :P

Or should I just ask? I don't want to get reamed out for posting in the wrong forum though.

edit: The Dodge isn't mine. :la:

Don't expect a ton of help after the way you acted before when people gave you advice...

Yes, I can, but often that means "let's compare engine sizes of our other cars". Not "anyone plz help me with my car fixings"... just kinda makes sense to me.

crzyone: Obviously forums fail at diagnostics, but I'm not asking for diagnostics here, I'm asking for knowledge. I know what the problem is, I just need to know how to fix it. :P

That's part of the problem. If it's an old Dodge, you CAN'T fix it, you can only work on it.

Well, I got it to start and run without flipping ghetto redneck switches... :thumbleft:

And I converted the ghetto-ass gauge voltage regulator to a silicon beauty with a little help from Radio Shack. No more pegged gauges for us, yay!
(I hope... stupid wiring.)

Now to figure out what that smoke is that comes from the dash when the engine's running with the headlights on... :salute:

I got my money on the "Silicon Beauty" slowly but steadily melting the insulation off your wiring. :salute:

It's a dodge. They have wiring issues, always have, always will.

Look for a burnt connector behind the fuse panel; once the contact corrode, they tend to start to smoke when you load them.

The silicon beauty takes from the 12 volts and makes a glorious steady 5 volts out of it, all at a low enough current as to where no smoking is going to happen. Plus, I already checked if it was getting hot. :thumbleft:

I've seen some of those loose connections in that wreck too. That's what destroyed the ammeter in the dash, loose connections made for not happiness with the connection, hence hot rods, and hence burn-melty. The meter would still work if I cleaned the contacts, but fuck if I want to go trusting it with the whole power system's current... :P

I still don't see how headlights could pull enough current to cause smoking. I think it's something shorted to ground. When the lights are on, the dash indicators all light up dimly at the same time - that can't be a good thing. With a damn near total lack of fused connections in that truck, it wouldn't surprise me a bit if the stupid thing was shorted...

But hey, we're getting into that diagnostics thing again... :la:

Do the math, brohab.

75w of bulb on 12v is 7amps... Times 2.

That's more than enough to smoke a wire--especially if the connections are bad.

And I guess you're right, I didn't know amps went up as volts went down. Ohm needs to go choke on a dick because that equation is just too complicated to figure out. Can't he just do it in Javascript for us morons to figure out? :la:
